Building a Better Blunt nose.

all the wings including damage.  the black and strait green strips wing are 35-36" (same wing profile)  the little one is 26" the red and yellow wing is 40"

Here is the dove tail motor mount, you can see the spring loaded anttena mount as well.

another look at the dove tail base. I dont like this plane's hatches you can see i have damaged the center section.

here is the motor attached to the base.

the sketch up view of the mount.

this is my favorate hatch configuration. seems strong enough the back part pivots over a spar

MOTION SICKNESS WARNING!!! these videos were not intended to be quality, just to test flight capibililties

the green 36" you can see its bumpy and yaw stability is not so great, sorry about the jello, I did not put in any vibration dampinging for these flights.

red 40"

The versa wing and fury flyer are both great wings  but have some undesirable characteristics i am attempting to change, first and foremost is low speed maneuvering.  I am flying at a field that is 117yds by 75 yrds. with pine trees on 2 sides.  There is a horrible wind shear as i pass 80ft in AGL.  I need a plane capable of stable, gentle, efficient flight, but also capable of punching thru the 80ft boundary then some low speed crazy tight maneuvers (for landing on windy days).  (plus I enjoy a crazy responsive fast wing) The composite picture shows all my current attempts, including one failure.  The folded wing was my favorite however it didn’t have enough strength to survive repeated full speed dive pull outs.  On the third battery I during a hard pull out she folded sending a 2200 mah 3 cell strait at my head.  My favorite surviving wing so far is the larger of green strips it is 36” semi symmetric wing 33degrees of sweep root cord 11.5 tip cord 5.5 and versa style elevrons  I fly both with and without a Gyro though it hardly needs it.

My last challenge is eliminating Dutch roll at all speeds, and decoupling yaw and roll .  (suggestions welcome).  I am hoping 3 degrees of negative dihedral will fix this I use sketch up to design my planes.

Since I was  testing multiple wings and wanted identical motor/prop performance, I designed a dove tail motor mount (3d printed) that not only allows me to slide the motor forward and aft but also to quickly switch the motor from one air frame to another.  If anyone is interested I can send you the STL’s or upload them.

Motor is Exceed rocket 2210 1650kv

30amp proto esc

Prop 8X4 apc

Servos:  (2) solar A107

Receiver: frsky D8R-XP

Gyro: DYNAM 3GS

Cam: Turnigy 808 key chain cam

Fight time: Min throttle 25-30mins WOT: 7-9mins

Wing loadings have been from 9-11.5 ounces per square foot.

I intend to change the Gyro out for a Multiwii Flip 1.5, NEO-6m GPS and 3dr telemetry.  My Final goal is autonomous flight with FPV.

Once this design is finalized I will publish designs.

I don’t have a HD cam yet so the included footage Is from 808 cam. The first video is with a the 36” green striped wing(gyro set to high)  the second is the red and yellowing (no Gyro)  It’s a bumpy day, wind is 15MPH on the ground gusting a lot, I was not flying with the intention of making a good video, so be ware if you get motion sick

EDIT added files as requested:  All mine were printed in PLA, so no ABS testing has been done on them.  I welcome feed back, i have lots of designs and am willing to help people who ask!

This is the Sketchup file and STL's for the firewalls developed during this project and a few extra goodies

I've been thinking of how decelerons can be incorporated into the Versa wing for yaw control, like on the B2 Bomber: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deceleron

Some experiments on the web that are related:

I love your motor mount, that is a great design. If you wouldn't mind posting the stl for those of us with 3D printer you would be awesome. If you do I'll be printing one out today for the Versa I've had cut out for a while but just haven't had a mount I liked.

STL's are up. most fit in a 50x50 foot print. look thru the designs the bolt in fixed fire wall is my fav and what i use on my versa wing. i install it with 4 nylon screws i think they are 8-24 but i will have to check.

Did you use the stabilization feature on YouTube for your videos? It seems like it since the frame bounces around a lot (I doubt it was all the wing's fault) and zooms in and out. Maybe less motion sickness issues if you didn't use that?

yes i used utube stable thing. i since have a mobius and FPV gear. footage is much better. I Decided for FPV i cant beat the versa blunt. however for crazy crazy wing flight these things rock.

STL's and source files have been uploaded, please do not publish them on Thingiverse but do use and modify as you wish.

Very nice article... Would love it if you could upload the STL's for the motor mount. Thx,

Ill upload some stls once i get home. I have a big stack of them. the slip track was intended just for testing it is not as strong as a solid motor mount. I Also have the sketchup files so you can modify them as you please.

I'd like to see you play around with differential to cure your roll problem then publish your results as I have always wanted to but then just get caught up in the joy of flying this wing.

do you mean using differential drag rudders? I don't think they are fesable on the small platform but they may be doable on the bigger wings.
