TITAN Tricopter Acro Demo!

by Zpack | May 12, 2014 | (11) Posted in Just Fun

Just a little stunt flying with a TITAN Tricopter. Keep in mind though that I'm not that great of a pilot, there's a lot more potential in this setup than I can demonstrate!

Here's the setup I'm using:

  • Frame: TITAN Tricopter from Fortis Airframes
  • Booms: 13” Carbon hybrid
  • Flight controller: MultiWii 328p w/FTDI
  • Motors: SunnySky x2212 1400kv
  • Props: 8x4.5” slow-fly
  • Battery: Turnigy Nanotech 2200mAh 4s
  • ESCs: HobbyKing F30a flashed with SimonK firmware
  • Yaw servo: Turnigy TGY-390DMH
  • Transmitter: Spektrum Dx8
  • Receiver: OrangeRx 6ch DSM2

MultiWii Settings:

Transmitter settings:

  • Pitch/roll rates: 110% rate, 15% expo
  • Yaw rate: 100% rate, 15% expo
  • Throttle curve: 12%-100% linear with throttle hold switch

Great vid! How much flight time do you get with this setup?

Thanks Mich! I get about 7-8 minutes of hard flying (nonstop 75-100% throttle), and 9-10 minutes if I'm just cruising.

Nice flying Zach. I'll have to get my Titan out again. It's been a while since I've flown a tricopter and I do like my Titan.

Do yourself a favour and get some HQ carbon 8x5 props for that setup. Trust me, you'll love them. Here's Soma's thrust test data for the SS2212 1400kv motor. The HQ props are soo much nicer. How does 1.4kg of thrust per motor sound :)

Thanks! I do like carbon props- my favorite setup is with SunnySky x2212 980kv motors, Graupner 10x5" E-props and a 4s 2200mAh battery, but on my acro setups I like to push my limits- which means I crash a lot- which means I break a lot of props... I do have some 10x5 Graupners that have broken tips that I've been meaning to cut down to 8x5's, I'll have to give it a try!

I acro'd my Titan into a wall this morning...lost a couple of zip ties, nothing else. God I love that design.

Lol ya what you didn't see in the video is the dozens of crashes it took to get to that point- if you're not crashing then your not pushing your skills!

"dozens of crashes it took..."
I think Mr. Hall would have included one or two of those ugly crashes to demonstrate to the viewers how his S.C. design can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. By editing your crashes out, you may have missed an opportunity to "showcase" one of the Titan's best values.

Very good point- however, what I was referring to were the dozens of crashes it took to be able to fly like this, I didn't actually have any crashes the day this was filmed. I still have yet to catch a good crash on camera, but when I do I'll surely post it!

The video is cool...but it's still not clear whether you can fly the thing continuously upside down.
Is it able to do that?

No, only collective pitch single-rotor helicopters can fly inverted continuously. There is a quad out there that has variable pitch props that can fly inverted, but it is an expensive and complex system and doesn't seem to me to have any advantage over a standard single-rotor heli.
