FT Simple Storch Build - Quick Tips!

by FliteTest | September 4, 2014 | (19) Posted in How To

The FT Simple Storch can be setup with all kinds of fun configurations. The build video covered one setup.

Leading edge slats come with your speed build kit and are also included in the free plans.

Separate ailerons and flaps is another mod you can setup. For this, you will need a y-harness connection for your servos.

In most cases, you'll need to enable flaps on your radio.

The window decal kits is another way to add that classic Storch look to your classic foam board warbird.

It would be great to see an easy tip on how to fill the undercut edges that the laser cutter leaves on the foam.

Great video guys. I think I will go ahead and build the Storch for this weekend. As you probably already know, we are expecting great weather here in Ohio this weekend. Should be perfect for a flying family outing, and the Storch will be great for a noob like me!

Have not had time to build mine yet but tempted to try the slates on another plane.

Good job on applying the decals. As a sign shop owner and fellow aviator, I've lettered a few of my buddies planes (big and small) in the past. I haven't built any dollar foam planes, yet, but I did just build a crack turbo beaver this past winter. Foamies are the way to go!

This project looks amazing. I can't wait to try this design - another fantastic model in the Flite Test lineup. One question that I have though, does the Flite Test crew Minwax the foamboard prior to construction? The foam board in the videos look quite white (the Minwaxed foam takes on a yellowish color)? I would like this model to last awhile. Thank you Flite Test crew and community!

My understanding is that they don't Minwax until it's been flown, so after assembly. Hot glue doesn't stick well to Minwax.

Hopefully this isn't too late!

What Type of Decals did you use? I have never seen any Dry Decals like that before. Please let us know.
Thanks this was a very useful video.

Those were not decals, They are more like black plastic tape --only a lot thinner. You 'll see this type of transfer in the car industry.

I see you Flite test! busting out a canard pusher eh. I still haven't bought a speed build kit yet, but if that makes it, I'm getting it!

Glue sticks. Harbor Freight doesn't carry the clear ones anymore. The ones they have are short and whitish.
Home Depot has the clear ones in the tools aisle. The manufacturer is Stanley. Price is $6.87 for a bag of 12.

I got cheap and didn't buy the stick-on windows (sorry FT). What I did do is take a spare piece of DTFB and cut it to shape to make 3D windows! Will apply after I paint and let you know how it looks.

I want to add LED 1 M light strips in each wing half. What is the best placement and how do I run the leads to the receiver or battery? Do I use scotch tape or hot glue to attach them or is the sticky back strong enough?
