Versa Wing with changeable fuselage pod

by Dagger_117 | October 6, 2013 | (9) Posted in Projects

I decided to hard mount my motor and electronics and make a swappable pod. The mod was easy to do simply by cutting out a 3" gap between the foiled part of the wing root cord leaving the flat bottom. Then design a pod that is low profile. Next vertically laminate some foam, cut out a shape and glue it to the pod. You can adapt this concept to anything you want i.e. FPV, or any other camera set up you have. I built mine for speed. Oh yeah...I didn't snap any pics of the bottom, but it's just solid black for those with enquiring minds...hope you like it

That paint job looks awesome! I'm just wondering how you are reinforcing the wing now that (it appears) you have removed the center section of the wing spar? Cheers.... J

Good point! The crushing effect on the sides of the pod should stop it folding in normal flight (for a while?) but if it's flown inverted it could just open up and fold in half. I hope there's something else we're not seeing...

Hi alibopo...Yes the pod is its strength in level flight, and surprisingly the wing is very strong without a spar running across the two wing halves...I flew inverted for a few brief moments with no problems...like you I am leery of this and will be adding a spar for safe measures

Hi J...Great point...yes the center section of the spar has been removed and reinforcement comes from the pod filling the gap...in the original design the spars do not connect across the center cut line of the wing and most of its strength comes from the top airfoil, hot-glue and tape holding it together...I did take that into consideration during the mod, but decided to try this theory out anyway... V2 will have a wooden spar that adds strength...this one will also get the mod soon...It flew very well and is extremely fast compared to what I'm used to (warbirds and profile jets)

That looks awesome! I'm working on something like this, but using the swappable motor mount pod. It's been moving slow, but this is some great inspiration!

It just never seems to stop amazing me what the Flite Test family can come up with. Great mod to a great design. i am guessing you carved a block of blue foam, shaped, sanded and painted to match. Nice work!

Hi WJ...thanks...yep laminated 12 pieces of 1/4" foam then hot-wired the shape, sanded, coated it (with a mix of polycrylic, light weight filler, and baby powder), sanded again, painted, and clear coat...lots of work, but great results

Great looking build. You know you have to do a build log when you build V2 and get us some plans for that sweet nose section! Keep up the good work!

Hi Rez...thanks...not to good at doing build logs as I get carried away with the build and forget to document what I did...I'll see what I can do about that though...I have a basic drawing of the nose section if anybody wants it...glad to share

Kinda looks Like a parkzone stryker

Hi RCFE...yeah you're right...it does resemble the Stryker...think I'll model V2 after the Stryker making it more aerodynamic

Absolutely amazing!!!!!!! I didn't really like the versa wing. But doing this myself would make me love it to death! P.S that paint scheme rocks!

Thanks FBRCME...glad you like it...it flies really well once trimmed up...excellent flight characteristics at slow and hi speed...you won't be disappointed with this wing
