I call it THE McBLUNTY
I just built a versa and a blunt nose version a couple days ago. I had a couple don wicked 64mm edf motors and fans laying around. I was looking at the blunt nose and my spare EDF fans, imagining a b2 bomber. Now I know I've seen a couple twin EDF blunt nose versas before. I never nearly liked what I saw due to questionable build designs and just the plain look of them. BUT, I loved the idea of a twin EDF B2 looking wing. Something that has some power and with a design that looked good, but at the same time is well thought through in the function/science. Now I'm not a brilliant man but I do love to learn . I think ive built something that looks great, has great function, and any one can do it. After building the plane, I look back now and see all of the million short cuts I could have taken (including just building the entire plane before adding the EDFs to the wings) . But here's the pics of the build . I'll try to add in comments as I go.
I started with making the versa wings. Then I went on the ft viggen plans and downloaded the 64mm edf mounts and the thrust tube. I played around with a few shapes but as youll see throuh the pictures what I fianlly went with. I used the viggen plans because I'll let some one else do the math and I trust the guys at flite test.
I moched everything up a few times before hot glueing . Make sure the edf wires are angled towards the blunt nose section that you're going to install later. Soldering on extensions is highly recommended . Just makes it way easier to hook up the speed controllers later.
I cut out a half circle in front of the edf fan for better air intake . I did not cut into the wing spar . the hole is flush with the spar. You could cut a cheater hole on the bottom of the wing if desired .
Looking back , I could have shaved down the top of the rear thrust tube mount. It would have gave the back end a taper that flowed with the wing . It's too late now that is all glued together. It's just a cosmetic thing. If I destroy it after I fly it , the next version will have the top of the rear mount shaved down. Covering the top of edf sections was simple once I fugured out the general shape I liked
They look pretty good with the packing tape and white gorilla tape . The McBlunty is urban camo, minwax, and spray paint . I went with a black gorilla tape wrap on it to match the over all look . Not bad
They aren't finnished yet due to the pregnant lady who won't let me buy any more plane parts for a while. I dont even know how to fly a plane yet. I have 5 of them though. I bought a bix3 to learn on . So far that isn't going well lol.
You can do this to any plane by using the viggen motor mount and thrust tube templates. All 3 mounts have to be the same width on both sides of the hole cut outs and the rear thrust tube hole has to be directly in the middle of the edf motor mount holes. Not an issue if you just use the viggen plans and shave the tops of the mounts into any shape . But if you mess with the sides or bottom then you have to make sure it all lines up . Also note that the viggen body tapers so the edf and thrust tube mounts are different widths . I lined them all up and cut them to tha same height and width .
I just had major knee surgery due to a dirtbike accident, so I've had 3 months to watch every episode of flite test about 3 times . Learning about this hobby and building planes has really helped me on the road to recovery. I just turned 30 so it shows it's never too late to get in the hobby. A couple of bucks in foam and paper, who knew it would be this fun . I don't know how to fly yet but it's still fun to create. Well let me know what you think!
