The final crashes that led the end of the USA trip. We gave it our best shot, but in the end, had to end the trip to ensure the safety of those around us.

You learned ALOT from this, and others can help you learn even more for the next attempt. Next time, add in an FPV RSSI signal tracking system. Should help with the Telemetry loss and FPV loss issues. With the altitude, it sounds like when you set the offset to compensate for the negative altitude, and you told the plane to fly to a specific location, at a specific altitude, it was adding in the negative altitude you had entered, ie -200 at 120 would be 320 instead of 120! I dint think ardupilot was built with the idea in mind of flying from point A to point B.
Ive watched the next 2 episodes as well, and agree that you need a fast chase vehicle, a "sleeping quarters" vehicle, and a trailer to hold the extra parts/planes with a workstation for repairs. I would also build multiple identical planes, running the same equipment, so if one fails, you can jump right over to another and keep going, then handle repairs later.
Major kudos to you for trying to accomplish a dream, for sticking with it til it was just impossible, and for looking to the future for the next attempt! When you make your next attempt, and if you are passing through TN, let me know! Might join ya for a short while :)
