Tips for a great flying event experience

This year StoneBlueAirlines is hosting the second annual Flying Circus FPV Flying event.

While we'd love to just post an article inviting you all to the event, while highlighting all of the great prizes that will be available, from many excellent and supportive sponsors, I know the editor wouldn't let that through as an article.  So, in an attempt to provide content while sharing the information about the event, here is a little contribution that the guys from SBA put together from our own experiences while visiting, and hosting RC flying events.

Jeremiah says:

1)     Know the event you’re going to.  Check out videos, where will you stay?  RV options?

There's nothing worse than traveling hours to get to a location, only to find you have no where to stay.  Do a little reseach, figure out where you'll be sleeping.  Does the event location offer onsite camping?  If you're bringing an RV, will they have electricity, water, or blackwater removal?  Is there plenty of space, or will you have to reserve a spot?  Is there somewhere nearby you can go, in case there's a problem at the event location?

2)     Make plans for adverse weather.

It can rain, and usually will.  Wind can ruin an event just as easily as rain.  Is your camping gear able to handle unfortunate weather situations?  Do you have plans on how to spend your time if flying is not going to be possible?

3)     Stay on site.

This can be a very important part of an enjoyable experience.  Time spent travelling back and forth to a hotel, or campground is time not spent at the event.  You didn't drive or fly all that way just to miss out because you weren't there while the fun stuff was happening.

4)     Pack for heat and cold.  Use a weather app to check previous year’s temps.

This is really important if you're travelling to another state, and you're unfamiliar with thier weather conditions at various times of year.  Day time temps can vary greatly from what you'll be experiencing overnight.

5)     Book your vacation days with travel delays in mind.

You don't want to have to call in sick to work, because when you tried to leave an event, the mud was too deep, and a giant RV blocked the only access road in or out of the event site.  The boss will never believe that one.

6)     Bring gear you won’t be upset if it doesn’t come home.

You're going to crash, and sometimes it won't even be your fault.  Event skies can be crowded.  Packing and travel can be hard on airframes.  Things get left behind in the rush to leave for home.  So don't pack your pride and joy, unless you're prepared for this to be it's last trip intact.

7)     Pack stuff you like if you’re picky or have dietary requirements.  Most events have cook out type foods.

If you have a gluten allergy, suffer from diabetes, or worse yet, are a vegetarian, you better bring your own food.  Most of the items you'll find at an event is cooked on a grill, or deep fried in oil.

8)     Make plans to meet up with people before you go.

One of the best parts of flying events, is you're surrounded by people who get "it".  They are already in the hobby, or are very interested in joining.  You already have something in common, so there's a good chance you're going to get along with some of the people there.  It's also a great opportunity to meet friends from online venues that you've associated with, but have yet to see face to face.

9)     Bring cash, but no more than you can afford spend.  The vendors will be very tempting.

While many vendors are using credit card readers, not all events are located where there's reliable cell service.  Cash is king.  Just remember, you might have some explaining to do when you get home, if there's more in the car than what you left with.

10)   Try the gear you’ve been wanting to buy.

The internet is great.  You can research all of your dream equipment, watch youtube reviews from your favorite online personalities, but nothing beats that hands on experience.  It doesn't matter how many features an item has, or how well the reviewer liked it, if when you get it, it just doesn't have the feel you were expecting.

11)   Book your tickets early.  Most shows have limited pilot space.

Events are well advertized, and there's only so much sky pilots can fly in.  So most events tend to put a cap on how many tickets they'll sell.  Get yours early, so you're not stuck as just a spectator, or worse, travel all the way there, to get turned away at the gate.

Matt the builder offers his suggestions as a top ten countdown:

10. bring backpack full of props for multi.

9. make sure you don't forget deodorant because you can forget showering.

8. Empty your SD cards before you leave without your laptop.

7. Don't go barefooted because you're eventually going to have to hit a port-a-john.

6. Wear your Stone Blue Airlines t-shirt (The chicks dig it).

5. Bring a pair of running shoes and a set of false teeth because the chicks that normally dig the SBA t-shirts are routinely devoid of teeth (this way it's your decision).

4. Surf the forums ahead of time to perfect the art of BS. It will serve you well around the nightly bonfire.

3. Avoid wearing large Panama Jack hats and "sponsored" style "team" jerseys. You will be targeted for a kinetic spot landing by someone.

2. Bring coffee, lots of coffee.

1. Leave annoying co-hosts at home.

With that valuable information presented to you, we'd like to take this opportunity to share the details of the Flying Circus.

Hey Flinch is famous thanks to Matt the builder - these are good tips except I have to stay at a hotel because I am spoiled. I ave some added tips that may not work for all - bring your wife so you can get on the spot authorization - this also helps test how much you are actually loved. Add- on to tip 9 from Jeremiah - you will spend more money so just accept it (note the reason to bring the wife) and the worst vendor for that temptation is Jeremiah!!!!!
