I have been looking into buying a killer FPV system for one of my planes, but I want to get a system that is truly an inspiring experience. Using video goggles seems to be the way to go. I’ve seen a lot of products out there including the Fat Sharks that you guys use on Flitetest. But when I see recorded video of the display... the actual video that you see in the goggles, it seems somewhat less inspiring that what we see in video that was recorded on the GoPro.

Then I stumbled on to this product online. The Oculus Rift. A high definition Virtual Reality headset system designed to give video gamers that “Matrix” experience. The feeling that you are right there IN THE GAME! The Oculus features immersive 3D rendering, a massive field of view, and super-low latency head tracking for an unbelievable 3D visual experience.

When I saw this, I said to myself, THAT is what I want to use for FPV! Something that make me feel like I’m IN the cockpit of the plane, flying around!

Now, there are some tricky obstacles here I’m sure. The Oculus Rift was designed for Video Gaming, not FPV. There is software to consider, and the issue of resolution. I don’t know much about FPV yet, but I think video transmitters are stuck with a fairly low resolution. Certainly not the kind of resolution the Oculus is looking for.

But tell me if I’m making any sense here... Can 2 cameras and video transmitters be used to feed the stereoscopic input resolution that these goggles are looking for? Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I bet there is someone who does know! And that is the challenge!

Currently, the company is offering the goggles to developers for only $300 which includes their SDK. I think this is the cheapest price these goggles will EVER be once they are released to the public. So now is the time! (Even if you have no idea how to do it yet!)

So, what do you think Flitetest? Are you guys up to the challenge? The challenge to create a platform to make FPV work with the Oculus Rift, for the most immersive, realistic, 3D, kick ass FPV system on the planet?

You have one week.... And..... GO!

;-)

I think this is a true lily exciting project, and would welcome the chance to own one of these headsets. As I feel even with the fat sharks your still missing the true POV of the pilot, but with 110 degree of view it should be really immersive, now we just need HD video and we are set for a amazing , and exciting RC future...can't wait..

I wonder if you could do it with a computer doing the interpretation of video signal to rendering for the rift. I assume that you'd need to be quite handy with coding to get that to work though.

From what i can see, and by no means definitive, it uses a single DVI input with 2 images on it, that have been shrunk and curved to match the lenses used.

would be awesome... if you have 2 working eyes that is, but the field of view would be very cool regardless.

just had a though...
if you were to input the video signal into RoboRelm you might be ale to get that software to change the video displayed to something you need.

I know this is a old post but I was searching to see if anyone had a comparison of using something like a oculus rift vs. goggles. Hobbyking just came out with there DIY goggle that looks like the oculus. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__53706__Quanum_DIY_ A while ago on one of the podcasts, someone called in asking David what he thought about using the oculus rift for FPV and David said it would be stupid. I don't know why though, because a lot of people are making their own diy goggles just like those hobbyking ones, and from what I have seen the oculus is just like those ones, just with a better screen. Of course you will never get the full hd display, at least with todays technology, because you can't transmit full hd over long distances wirelessly. But what you are looking for as far as a 3d immersive experience using the oculus rift, already exists. For 700 bucks not including the oculus. http://emrlabs.ca/index.php?pageid=3 It probably didn't exist a year ago, I just saw it at the rc expo in toledo a couple months ago.
