Swappable P-40 Warhawk

This is a DTFB Swappable P-40 Warhawk. This is my first design in the FT style, and as such it has certain little issues with it, but it really turned out great! It flies really nice, it looks pretty good, and it isn't difficult to fly. I designed this plane using Adobe Illustrator and Blender. The wing is a modified FT Spitfire wing, and the fuselage is heavily inspired by the FT MiG-3, but this plane took a lot to make the whole design work out.

The plane flies very tamely, handling the wind very well and being very stable. Its very happy at low speeds and stalls extremely nicely, with absolutely no tip-stall, so landings are a breeze. Its top speed isn't very high as its a pretty draggy design, but it will go respectably quick. As I did most of the designing for this plane in Illustrator, I needed to do a 3D mockup before I built it to make sure it would go together well. I did this in a free 3D program called Blender. Let me know if you'd like a tutorial on how to do this.

If you are familiar with the FT build style, then you can build this plane easily. With that in mind, I'm releasing the plans I made for this for free. You can download them here, in full size or tiled layout:

If you'd like to show your thanks with a donation, you can do that here:

If you can't figure out how to build this plane, I'd suggest watching the FT Spitfire and FT MiG-3 Build videos. There are problems with the plan, such as the hatch being slightly too short and the wing bottom plate centerline angle being slightly wrong, but those can be easily bodged during the build. I may upload a revision of the plans in the future with these issues fixed. I'm also planning on designing some more classic planes in this FT style, so if you have any special requests please let me know!

Thanks for reading this article and checking out my P-40 design! I wish you great luck with all of your builds and flights! I'll leave you with my bird once I got a coat of paint on her and a video of the maiden flight. Thanks for stopping by!

Thats funny because I am converting a 1970s (?) Guillows P-40 Warhawk Balsa kit into an RC plane. What a coincidence!

(Check out the thread in the forums!)

Good stuff, I love Guillows kits. I've been working on a Guillows Corsair RC conversion for about half a year now, taking it real slow and loving it. Good luck with yours!

I just finished performing this with the Guillows kit.
This flew amazing right up till I performed my first roll..
At that point the Plastic spar that the landing gear connect to snapped and the wings folded.
Please remember to reinforce the wing with some Carbon fiber to prevent this from happening.

I've been wanting to do that for a while

Thanks Count, just what I was looking for, a Warhawk/Kittyhawk/Tomahawk will be my next project after I get my FT Spitfire and Mustang airbourne again.

Found the place where you will get the club penguin code which will be generated within a second and you will be allowed to play club penguin with full freedom and you will enjoy very much.

So you've managed to get a penguin to fly? Wow! I'd like to make a FT swappable version of that ;)

I've been hunting up and down for the perfect p40 for my little brother,I've found a few I'm going to try this one but on a scale of 1-10 how stable is it? also I want to do indoor slow flying with my squadron If I convert it o undercaber will it e able to preform these characteristics?

Its very stable for a warbird, but still a warbird, so I'd say 6ish. It won't fly indoors without some real modification, I.E. not only make the airfoil entirely under-cambered but also scale the whole design down by ~20% at least. It is possible but you'd have to do some planning, and I'd suggest building it stock first to see how the build process will change when you modify it.

Planes like this aren't designed to fly indoors
