Flite Test - EzOSD (On-Screen Display)

by FliteTest | August 3, 2014 | (12) Posted in Reviews

We took some time from our travels in France to stop by this amazing landscape. It was the perfect place to show off the ImmersionRC EzOSD.

The EzOSD provides the pilot with a plethora of data overlaid right onto the video signal.

Whether you use goggles or a monitor, you can customize your setup to reflect whatever craft you want to fly. Max distance and altitude will flash alarms if you go outside of your predetermined boundaries.

This entire menu is accessed through three button on the side of the EzOSD itself and seen through the goggles so you can customize your settings while at the field.

Tony built this TBRC 60" wing from Team Basement RC to show us just how the EzOSD works.

Here you can see the display shows speed, distance, a home compass, and altitude. All measurements can be set to metric or imperial.

Due to the formatting of this DVR the bottom portion of the OSD wasn't recorded, BUT...

We did do another run with a quad.

This is the XuGong-10 outfit with the same EzOSD.

Here you can see the current sensor providing battery usage, voltage, milliamps, as well as time flown/estimated max time for the battery. The estimated time will also fluctuate depending on how hard you are working the battery.

We can't stress enough how useful this device is. There is no worse feeling than flying your investment and losing your orientation to home, or when your quad runs out of juice and plummets to the ground. These are worries of the past. The best defense you can have against losing your craft is information. If you are interested you can get more information on the EzOSD here!

We want to thank the entire ImmersionRC crew for the wonderful trip though the Alps, and we especially want to thank YOU for watching! We wouldn't be able to do any of this without your support and we are forever grateful.

Most of everything you are posting lately is fpv and tri and quad copters, most of which is out of the price range of probably half of your audience. And your mission is to get as many people into the hobby as you can. perhaps it is time to return to the basics and the quick builds that made you popular in the first place?

Well, to be fair, they have an entire series of beginner videos, and models ranging from basically a flying piece of sheet (Nutball) stepping up to advanced things like warbirds, 3D plane, EDF etc, and everything in between. There's not much point in continuing beginner stuff forever. Those beginners will hopefully become more advanced after a while and may like to see what lies ahead. And this video is kind of a beginner intro to what an OSD is, although it could be more informative and less of a product advertisement.

The base of their business is Adam's foam board, expanding on this style of construction is becoming less attractive due to it's lack of durability (moisture). I certainly hope they are respecting the dangers working with carbon fiber. The local elections are 2 days away and there will be an abundance of the material coroplast used in election signs afterwards . Fairly durable and workable combined with foamboard can make a lasting plane with a good weight tradeoff.

It's not really that bad as it feels to you. The latest plane video was the one from FliteFest with the giant FT Flyer. Then there were the Carbon Z-Cub and the UMX Radian about a month ago.

The guys have been in Europe and had to manage FliteFest which probably was one of the biggest electric flight only meetups in the US. So it was a little hard to get the time in for a proper scratch build video. Still they had the ElectroHub come out as a new video and had intro and build videos for it.

In addition they had quite a few episodes regarding the FAA stuff that is going to change FT as we know it if it goes through. Not only because of the FPV stuff, but also because of the commercial aspect of the hobby which FT is based on.

A few of these episodes were actually additional ones - out of the default "two per week" release schedule. Just because it's that important.

And the following weeks will probably be a lot of FTFF and warbird videos. At least two of them are planned to be released now. You will probably have the MultiCopter faction stand on their feet then, because of all the fixed-wing stuff.

Had you been using a trainer cord with a line of sight pilot ,you might have saved someone a significant hike.

There is a dongle for your phone to record and display the telemetry data. In the 2nd part of the video he is using that to gather data from the Quad they are flying.

It was the Fatshark CMOS camera, they said so in the video. http://www.fatshark.com/product/1745.html

I have it myself (it comes with the Attitude V2 goggles) and it's quite good. A little bit better live feed quality than a Mobius, but I prefer the Mobius anyway, since it records decent video and still gives pretty OK live feed.
