Like many others getting into FPV, I purchased the Fat Shark Predator package from our favourite Hong Kong vendor. It comes with a nice little camera, but unfortunately the camera has no easy way to be mounted on a tricopter or any other aircraft. I've also got a GoPro 3 and wanted to be able to switch between the two cameras depending on the circumstances. So my goal was simple: Figure out how to create a mount for the Fat Shark camera that reuses the GoPro mounting hardware that I've already installed on the tricoper.
The first challenge was to create something to hold the camera without having to modify or glue the case. I came up with the following:
This consist of:
- Two zip ties
- A piece of floor tile that I found at Home Depot, cut and sanded.
The zip ties are attached to the camera lens in opposite directions and with the tails pulled through holes in the tile and then held on with the locks from two more ties.
I also epoxied a 1/4" - 20 (tripod compatible) nut to the bottom of the mount. My first attempt was to use hot glue but it wasn't strong enough to handle twisting on the nut. This gives me a decent and stable holder for the camera. The next problem was how to attach the rig to the GoPro sticky mount on the tricopter. What I wanted was to find a way to attach a regular camera to a GoPro mount. Searching in Google returns lots of hits on ways to mount a GoPro on compatible hardware but very little on doing the inverse. Finally I found this on Amazon (search for Rec-Mounts)
This adapter attaches to a standard GoPro base and allows you to mount any camera that supports a tripod. The whole thing assembled looks like this:
Here is the final result on the Tricopter.
I am trying to make everything modular on my F450. So I can have 3 setups
1 - Click in my Fatshark on the top for FPV and click in my goPro under for video
2 - Click in just the Fatshark but with pan and tilt
3 - Click in Fatshark on top and legs with GoPro in a gimble under it all.
Trying to make the most of the GoPro clips and mounts. Would love a 3D printer to print off some custom mounts for the GoPro. Using that instamorph plastic at the minute.
Yours looks nice and light, really cool.
