Maiden Flight Scratch Build Nutball

Maiden

I have always been intrigued by the the RC world, but constantly put off by the high cost of getting started, and within the world of planes, the reality of crashing my first airplane was inevitable. The thought of spending a bunch of money on a plane only to crash it really prevented me from ever getting started.

Enter FliteTest.

I met Chad through some business we were doing together and became very interested in the shows he was producing.  Not only was it fun and interesting...but they were building things out of $1 foam!  Now this really had my interest.  I could finally crash learn to fly without the disheartening feeling of wasting a bunch of money.

I have to be honest though, the F22 Raptor is a plane that I really love.  So when I saw FliteTest's video of the foamy F22 Raptor, I knew that I had to have one and that video really pushed me into wanting to get into the hobby.  Only problem was that it seemed like it might be a little more advanced then I was capable of controlling for a first ever flight.  So I decided to look around and start a little more simply...but someday soon, I can't wait to build one!

So here we are...

A few months, two good friends, and a couple late night building sessions later, we have joined into the hobby.  As everyone knows, hobbies are best when shared with friends, so my next door neighbor Tom, and life-long friend Ben joined me in watching a bunch of videos; deciding to take FliteTest's recommendation about building the Nutball as our first ever RC plane to learn on.  Well, actually my neighbor Tom has flown for a few years now, but both Ben and I have never had any experience at all (so forgive any inexperienced flying in the video).

At the end of the day

We all three walked away with still functional planes!  This was a great feeling of success, but now it is only fueling the desire to build the next one.  We ordered more parts and I'm sure it won't be long now before we are testing our wings on the next in the FliteTest swappable series, the FT Flyer!

Many thanks to Chad and the crew at FliteTest for kickstarting a new hobby, hopefully one that we can enjoy for years to come, and one day give me something to share with my son, who is already so passionately talking about the planes.

Ha, we are finding this to be exactly true. Burned through most of the first bag within the first several days of flying. Already order 2 additional packs to make sure we can keep things things in the air!

Great video! Its nive to see others that are starting out into the hobby. Scratch building is the only way to go if your starting with planes. I just finished a7' 8" F22 build of the same one they scratch built. Love that plane! Great job!

Sorry I didn't see this comment until now. We wanted to use these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=2069&aff=247441. But they were out of stock, so we ended up going to a local hobby shop and got a Tower Pro 26-28 or something like that.

Great job of flying and awsome paint job. Makes me want to get the Nutball and do more flying. A few questions if you do not mind: 1) the wheels look enormous and heavy, was the weght in the required CG area?; 2) there was very little high alpha flying seen which prompted question #1. Great job guys!

The wheels were extremely large. That came as a result of us ordering parts without any knowledge of what we were doing. We just ordered without paying attention to the size, and they came and were huge. Surprisingly though, they were still really light as they are just low density foam. We used them for a while, but by the time we built the FT Flyer and the FT Delta, we removed the landing gear all together and just hand toss them to launch.
