I found this very entertaining and a really good experiment. Nice job, especially since you pulled it off with a short crew and a service you have never used.

I did like this type of podcast with a couple exceptions. Like others were saying, only do this as a segment of your normal podcast, instead of the entire podcast. Also, I had no clue you were doing a live call in, until the podcast showed up in my podcast listener. How did you announce it? And the delay like others said was quite bad. Im not sure if the phone number was actually a website type setup, but maybe you could do it like they do on the radio, have a actual land line phone number to call into and record you and that line at the same time, and then there would be no delay. But I don't know what goes into that either, maybe it requires more equipment than you have. Anyway, I love all the other podcasts, keep them coming. Thanks

David's relentless optimism is.... Awesome! It's amazing how the act of adopting a positive reaction to events has an effect on those around you. Obviously there were kinks, but every time I started to notice them, David would chime in with how awesome it was that so many people were calling and how great it was to talk to people etc. I love the Flite Test method of just trying things, it's truly an amazing business model. Anyone read the book Little Bets? It's a trait of successful business people, willingness to try anything and see what happens. Nothing is a failure when you learn from it.
My feedback: great idea, way to soldier through the obvious klunky nature of the interface. With the bugs worked out and no delay, I think it would be a great listen. I enjoyed hearing David and Chris answer questions. I appreciate the time you guys take to make these podcasts, thank you!

I have to agree, this podcast was a fail. Yes it was a cool Idea and all, but it just doesn't work with your style, and people seemed to get this "Oh wow, I'm talking to the FT crew on the Phone!" sound.

Good try, but definitely stick to your standard format until the bugs and kinks are out.

I LIKE the direct interaction. Yes it was a bumpy ride this time, but it was an experiment. I would recommend you have a "How To" page on connecting in and such. From my own experience this is the minimum info folks need to know:

* When you are waiting, many of these systems will drop you back to a low bit rate. It takes a few seconds for it to realize that you are actually talking and then go to higher bit rate. One word responses quite often get lost. i.e. "Hi" (that applies to both ends)
* Do not have ANY background noise.. even a low radio in the background will screw up the Automatic Gain for your end of the call
* There is a delay... don't try to talk when someone else is talking.. it's not really a phone. i.e. it is Half Duplex

I thought the format was nice. A couple of suggestions. . . Talk radio hosts tell people thanks for your call as they dump them to keep things moving. You had two things working against you - you were contending with a delay and then you did a bunch of thank you see ya and goodbye before dumping the call. I think it will help to let listeners know you plan to dump them with one succinct "thanks for the call". Once you get the timing down that will help. Also talk shows have a call screener to queue the calls so they know they are next. I don't know if the app you're using offers some way to help with that - but you need some way of identifying the caller so they know they are up. If you adjust those things - I'd probably not be able to get enough and want to hear it every FAH week!!

200 out of 10, would buy balsa kits from flitetest. ;p . Sometimes feels like quality laser-cut balsa kits have become a bit of a rarity.

Pretty awesome for the first time trying the live format. A few hiccups but overall not bad. I do think what makes the live format work in Radio is that the hosts usually ask people to call in regarding a certain topic. I think if there was a topic and a focus the live format would be much easier and entertaining to listen to. Keep up the good work!

Always fantastic to hear you guys, but this one was painful to listen too. And while I'm being unusually negative, give the full scale stuff a miss. Everything your doing is brilliant.... If only I could get foam in Australia. Hear you next week....

The technology let you down on this one. The big delay between when the hosts would ask the question and the listener would respond was really distracting (only could listen til about half way through the second caller). Sad. If you go forward with this concept, listen to a few talk radio shows to hear how they handle callers. They basically get to the question immediately and then shut the caller off and answer the question without dialog with the caller. In other words, let the professionals do the talking. Just my 2 cents.

I liked it, & it had its positives and negatives. I think doing it once in awhile, maybe once a month or once every couple of months. The concept is neat though. Maybe explore something with some live video feed too! Keep up the good work Chris!

I typically enjoy the podcast, but this one missed the mark. With the sounds quality issues and callers not prep'd, this was difficult to listen to. I had initially listened live, but disconnected because of these issues. I hope that you stick with the original format or are better prepared. I love what you guys do, but this was a fail... sorry!

David, don't listen, you are awesomely awesome!!
I cut you some slack because you're fine-tuning your English in the U.S. instread of somewhere cultured like here in Australia LOL
The talkback format is good, it would be probably be better with an off-air person to short-cut the "hello.. hello.. hello... are you there?" bits....! Other than that it was great.
Can't wait for the "FT Goes to Switzerland" episode(s)! Maybe a bit of Alp flying with Trappy??

Awesome!
You are all awesome, what you do is awesome and that you make us all part of it is awesome.

I love the idea. I really enjoyed the podcast. Yup, you should do more. Obviously, there's some shrubs to remove from any new path and the same is true here. I don't really think you need help there.

Only suggestion is to do it once every couple weeks, or once a month to get a routine and a rhythm, then start working it into more and more of your productions. I expect you folks will get it down pat as that seems to be the truth of all of ya and I'd love to see this another aspect of your work when you do. Don't drop it, just take your time to get it down and we'll enjoy every moment as well as support all we can.

Thanks again for being real, sharing that reality and not over producing fun.
I no longer refer to "the rc community". It's not been a conscious change, but I now refer to "the Flite Test Community" as you've laid the foundation and built the town that is the community that this hobby was always supposed to be.

Have a grand and wonderful day,
Frank

Ps: You're all awesome!

For Hero 3+ resolution and FPS Micbergsma has some really good video on you tube. In summary, 1440 @ 48 and 1080p @ 30 have sharpness issues.

Tip #330 and 331 (sorry phone won't paste link)

I would only stick to this format for a maximum of 45 minute segment in the regular AH podcasts AND only if the lag issues were fixed and the calls were screened. Good idea, glad you experimented with it, refine it and maybe it will work.

Sadly I could not listen to the whole podcast (FTAH 20). The delay and odd pauses broke up the flow of the show too much in my opinion. I loved everything FTAH posted but this one. Keep up the good work.
I would like to add that I really like how your whole mentality towards this hobby is family and community based. I don't have to pause the podcast/video or question anything that you are going to say which means that I can listen to this show with my kids around.

I hate to leave negative feedback, because I love what you guys do, and it is always so entertaining, and positive. But, Please don't do live pod casts. I know it is your first time doing it, and bugs are to be expected, but, even if it was flawless, doing a live show is not going to be as interesting as a structured discussion, or even an unstructured discussion about the great stuff you do and the fun you always seem to have, or informational knowledge that you can pass on. If people are going to be able to call in, I think that you should definitely listen to the call, or topic of the call ahead of time, so you avoid the questions that have already been answered multiple times and the bad connections.

I love your pod casts, and your web show. I can't get enough, but, aside from the few callers that had similar experiences as me, it was hard to listen to this time.

Hopefully you won't take this comment personally, and I, by no means, am a professional pod-caster, so my comments may not mean much. It is just my opinion. Can't wait for the next one. Keep up the great work.

I did not like the format. Actually took 3 sessions to finish. I have enjoyed all podcast until this one. I prefer the pre recorded questions more than this.

Really enjoy the content and look forward to future pod casts that do not involve this Q&A format.

I have to say that listening to the podcast 020 FTAH: LIVE Q&A Edition is just something I could not manage to complete. The lag in the phone calls was too much to handle. Also I believe that screening the calls for this type of show is a must. This podcast was simply....terrible.

Having said this, I can't wait for the next podcast.
