The Valkyrie - Joe Nall Project Build

by FliteTest | June 3, 2015 | (10) Posted in Projects

While attending Joe Nall 2015 we had the chance to talk with some of the people involved in the Valkyrie Project Build.

The Valkyrie is a Project Build that involved the help of 100's of Volunteers and took over 8 years to complete.

Learn more about the Valkyrie Project HERE

For the past 8 years, volunteer builders would work on the Valkyrie plane during the Joe Nall events over the past few years, at Triple Tree Aerodrome.

Builders would sign their name and install their piece into the plane.

After years of work, and with the help of 100's of builders the Valkyrie is final finished!

On this maiden flight, the Valkyrie was running a Hacker Q80-8M Motor and spinning a 24 x 10 prop.

The wheels are two 6lb. steel wheels, custom made to offer nose weight for the plane.

The Valkyrie is based off of an original free-flight version and features some of the same design elements as the original, such as the pylon that mounts the wing high and creates apendulum effect and stability.

This is a fantastic project plane and everyone was excited to see it make its maiden flight.

The sun was going down fast as the Valkyrie Project Plane took to the sky.

Eric Monroe received permission to fly the DJI Inspire 1 during the maiden flight and captured some of the great air to air that you see in this episode..

We'd like to thank everyone involved in this project for all of your hard work!

This is a king of free flights, right up there with the Champion. This is a plane I will build when I retire (distant, distant future).
Great build, great testament to patience and persistence. Where were you when they started this plane back in 2007? Some of us may not have even been born!
Cheers!

Carl Goldberg's original , in 1937, would have used tissue and dope, but also, his fuselage was fully balsa skinned.

Here's a link to one of the best builds you'll ever see. http://www.frannybrodigan.com/Valkyrie.asp

Wow! That's the biggest R/C plane I ever heard of!
Does anyone know what type of covering this uses?

I was up at the hangar the evening they flew this. It was quite a sight.
As I recall, they seemed to have some trouble getting it back on the ground, as it wanted to just float in the air forever.
If you have never been to the Joe Nall Fly-in, it is an event worth going to. Originally, just for giant scale airplanes, it is now a place to see just about anything.
Happens every May just after Mother's Day.
There are fliers from all over the world there. Just Google Joe Nall for info.
