UPDATED: New setup with new flight video much better parts updated in bold.

Bat Bone X Quad Build

I am new to multirotor and really love the Flite Test speed build kits. Late one night after discovering the store I couldnt sleep thinking of all the possiblities for fun. I first ordered the Spitfire speed build kit but was not ready to take the leap into building another multirotor. (crashed my BlueskyRC Spider Hex on its first flight long story and longer build) in short the ESC's where not simonK flashed and it started to oscillate and crash. After a week of looking at simpler builds I decided on the Batbone Frame, new motors, better esc's, APM 2.6 mega, ext. I couldn't wait to get home to see what pieces showed up while salvaging parts from the Spider Hex. It was hard to decide on TRI copter or V tail and ordered two kits just in case. I was thinking more compact foldable multirotor able to carry my GoPro and maybe some FPV gear once it was tuned and flew well. The build started to stray as soon as I opened the kits and this is what I ended up with.

Setup:

Two Bat Bone frame kits

1/2" Flite Test booms cut to 17mm long

Center boom two 1/2" poplar wood gorilla glued and clamped cut to 41mm long (seal it with minwax or it will get wet and soft) (Upgraded to 2- 13mm x 13mm aluminum booms)

Two pairs Straight Motor Mount 13-370

APM 2.6 Mega flight controller UBLOX Gps with homemade boom (Switched to Multiwii PRO Ez3.0 Blackened Mag Edition with Ublox 6H Gps for ease of setup and was ready to go out of the package with mimimal tuning)

FrSky TFR 6 FASST Compatable RX with homemade rabbit ears

Futaba 8FG Super TX

Suppo 2208/14 1450 KV motors x4 w/ 8x4 props (Upgraded to DJI Phantom 920 kv stock motors Graupner 11x5 props)

Ipeaka 22A SimonK Flashed x4

2200 mah 3s Lipo 1 or 2 battery option with Y cable (3300 4s for longer flight time with 10x5 Graupner props)

GoPro Hero 3 Black

Fatshark Preditor V2 FPV 250mw TX

4-4" male to male RX to Flight controller connectors (Deleted no need for them with Multiwii Pro Ez3.0)

Lots of velcro and zip ties

1400g AUW with all FPV gear, would like to get it close to 1300g. (1340g AUW cleaned up excess wiring)

I was stuck at this point for hours trying to deside because I had ordered the parts to do either or both.

Then I started messing around with ideas and one thing led to another:

Somthing started to take shape but still not sure where to go next:

Reverse Bat Bone Quad?

Then the Ideas really started to flow as it came together but the whole time i'm thinking will it fly:

The center boom was too long and it was way to floppy so back to the drawing board for a redesign:

Shorter center boom and reverse the front Bat Bone frame:

Build Updated much better with aluminum ceter boom and motor/prop combo

Nice how you put those proper rabbit ears on the crappy wires poking out of the receiver.
I'd read an article on just that.

I saw them 3d printed, or maybe you can build it yourself with 2 straws and some tape

Hey great minds think alike I built an X8 Octocopter the same way with a gimbal and a fixed camera for flying.

A short video of it's first flight as a bare airframe with no cameras

Wow nice build, I was pondering doing 8, lightness and super compact is what i'm going for. Throw in a backpack and head out to a remote area.

Yeah I was going for redundancy I have the bat bone in tricopter form for those times when I want to take something more compact. I still like the tri for flying around I find the X8 still doesn't have as good a yaw control. How is the yaw on the quad vs tri or have you tried it as a tri yet?

I have not tried the TRI Copter yet but I will soon. The yaw is okay I like FPV so not much sport flying but as I get better who knows. I love the build and design as much as I love flying them.

A piece of the bracing cut from the Bat Bone Frame that was removed to get the center beam in, one antenna tube cut to lenght, some tubes of heat shrink the size of the antenna tube, two small zip ties to tie the tubes to the cut frame piece, and CA glued to the fr sky receiver case. I will do an article next time I build one to show how its done.
