Weller WPS18MP High-Perf. soldering iron review.

I have a new favorite soldering iron.  The Weller WPS18MP High-Performance.    I picked it up from Amazon for 27 bucks and I love it.  It has a green/red led that turns red when you turn it on and then within about 30 seconds it turns green when it's reached temperature.  The cord is removable and the unit itself is very light.  The work is all done in the removable tip which you can remove at working temperature due to the rubber coated base.  The work tip is a nice fine point and shorter than traditional irons so if you are shaky like I am it's much easier to control when performing small tasks.  It has a very bright white led that lights up the work area pretty well.  When you are done with it you can lay it right on the table without worrying about a stand and when you're done you can turn it off or remove the cord and lay it down so kids like mine don't run by and pull it onto the floor.  All in all I give it a 5/5.

I would say 3/5.. I had this unit.. Gets hot fast but when soldering it seems to loose heat fast and can't keep up. I bent the tip at the socket ruining it. After three soldering irons .. I gave up and ordered the really nice Hakko station. cheap irons are okay but the costs add up and you would have been better off getting a nice one to begin With

I guess I should have specified this one for smaller items. I have a pistol grip iron that I use for anything large. I can see what you mean about the socket being a problem. I haven't had any of those problems yet, I guess time will tell. For frequent and larger work you really can't beat a good soldering station. I have a nice Weller station at work that I've used for years but for small stuff at home I still really like this iron. Thanks for your comments, really got me thinking.

I can see that.. For small jobs this would be perfect... I just have never had a nice station.. My first iron was 20 years old. Now that I solder more I finally decided to get a station.
