warbird scratch build

I wanted to do another scratch build plane and I have been wanting a warbird so I decided to set out and build one so I based my plans off a P-51. This was my process behind building it I didnt use any fancy software (mostly i cant get them to work for me) but I just used my imagination and inginuity.

I cut the outside lines and creased inside lines to make the fuse curved and all one piece.

Here it's done.

I built this box to fit the power pod and also hold the round shape of the fuse.

For the nose I had to notch it and glue it together to make a nose cone.

This is the fuse all put together.

this is one wing panel its going to be an armin wing design just tapered off at the end.

for the landing gear i put in a arrow shaft and found a wooden dowl rod that fit in the arrow tightly. I put it in the wing spar this worked ok but I found out that few hard landings it will rip through the foam so i ended up cutting an access hole in the wing to add a popsicle stick on both sides and have had no issues since if I rebuild it I would add that support before closing it up.

This is king of what it looks like through the wing this was not the dowl rod that I used it was not large enough but you get the idea.i then drilled a hole in the arrow and dowl rod and put a piece of wire through it to lock it in. and used a screw to mount the tire on the dowl but you must drill it out first or it will split the dowl. What i like about this setup is if you have a hard landing it in theroy should break the dowl and not the plane.

this is what it looked like brfore adding the tail feathers.

this is the elevator in the tail i made a slot and slid it in and glued it together.

The elevator i tried a deal with two control linkages to each side but it was an epic failure so i ended up taking a piece of wire and putting across the two and cutting a slot for the wire to move.

made the canopy and was not the best way but couldnt come up with much better made it magnetized and havent lost it in flight it just doesnt look very good.

This is the inside and how the canopy attaches I put the servos in their and I put my battery up there.

You can see that this had flaps and that the servos were mounted in the wing i cut open area to put the servos in and taped the flap shut that way later I will have access if needed.

The tail wheel is mounted on a dowl rod i tried to make it sterable but my attempt at that did not turn out to well so i ended up glueing it in place.

All painted and almost ready to fly.

Day of the maiden!

this is video of the maiden flight had some issues when went to land wasnt perfect but the dowl rod broke like it was suppose to.

Thank you and I saw that can't wait to see how they did their design.
