This is the second jet in the 64mm EDF series that Motion RC has been doing. We were able to fly the F-8 Crusader and now the F-105 Thunderchief. We really, really like that with this series, they haven't been selecting the most obvious and beloved jets. Everyone loves an F-16 but it's so nice to see some variety in the smaller "park jet" category.
We were throughly impressed with how easy and locked in these planes are to fly. While they are certainly not a first airplane - it's not unthinkable that it could be a third airplane. It's easy build time and predictable flight characteristics make it a pretty comfortable experience. While it's going to be a handful at full throttle, many pilots won't need to explore those boundaries to have a great time.
When you think 'Cold War Jet', you may think of MiG's, Sabres and F-4's. Another key player in conflicts of this time was the unique Republic F-105 Thunderchief, a thunderously quick jet capable of Mach 2.
The F-105 was a supersonic fighter-bomber used in the Vietnam war. When the Thunderchief entered service it was the largest single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft that had ever been built. Fun fact: Republic, the manufacturer of the F-105 Thunderchief, continued the tradition of employing the word 'Thunder' into the names of its planes that dated back to the P-47 'Thunderbolt' in WW2.
Flite Test have the privilege of revealing Motion RC's brand new model of the F-105 to the world. It's a pretty neat piece of kit for any RC jet fan, and especially those of you who love the look of those classic Cold War RC jets.
Spec
So what sort of performance can you expect from this bird? Well, the 64mm ducted fan with its 4500Kv motor produces some serious wallop! Add to this the modest size of the airframe, with a wingspan of just 20.8" (530mm) and a length of 31.5" (800mm), you can imagine that the airplane is capable of some serious speed. As you saw in the video, our 270 sized quad had some trouble keeping up!
