Before the astrox I had only owned one frame, the MRM 225. A brilliant frame but I'd had it for a year and it had seen better days. So a replacement in the form of the astrox x5.
This is my overview of this freestyle frame and my overall opinion on it.
First Impressions
The first thing to note is that the packaging is super high quality with a nice box and all the carbon parts all separated. The hardware is super nice as well (some of the best I have ever seen) with no jiggle in the threads or standoffs at all. The carbon has the "silk" finish and is THE best carbon I have ever seen in a frame. Plus rounded edges are really neat and give a good finish.
Assembly
The frame was really easy to put together. Tolerances are super tight and there is no give in the end product. There is no need to bodge anything on the build and everything is perfect. The frame looks tidy and is really compact when built.
Why?
The Astrox x5 had always had a certain attraction to me and I don't know why. Maybe it was because top pilots use it such as Johnny for or banniuk. Or the really nice build and finish quality?
Tuning
This frame has not been hard to tune by any means. Vibrations in the footage are caused by motor 4 having a bent shaft or something. It took a hell of a blow :-). Check out my you tube channel under the same name for the crash. The video is called Why you should fpv - epic! - visit the channel if you want!
My current PIDs and rates can be found here
These filters have been lowered on the P and D terms to remove the noise from motor 4. With new motors you can get these values higher. (defaults work decent)
Please note that the video is taken without my new soft mounts. There is vibrations all over the footage if you look closely. I can tell you now that without a change the PIDS and filters are butter!
Overall verdict
In my opinion the Astros x5 is one of the nicest frames on the market. It looks good, quality is good and it flies better than good. It can't be that bad if top freestylers are obsessed with It!
Thanks for reading!
