SunnySky V2216-11 900kv Motor Review

by MaxPower | May 5, 2014 | (12) Posted in Reviews

This is a video review of the SunnySky V2216-11 900kv Motors.  The bottom line these are great little motors, smooth and good build quality.

I paired them with 20A ESCs flashed with simonk, 10"x4.5 props and mounted them on a tricopter.

I broke it down into three parts: Overview, Thrust Testing and Test Flight

Part 1 - Overview - General Information

Part 2 - Thrust Testing - Motors were put a test scale.

Part 3 - Test Flight - Motors were mounted and flown on a tricopter (David Windestal`s).

This is really cool, nice review. I'm trying to put together a scratchbuilt Quad. Thanks for sharing, gives more options on motors.

Nice review. I also upgraded my tricopter to these motors a few months ago and I could not be happier. In fact I bought four more for my new quad build. I fly them on 4s with the 10x5 gemfan e-props(thin style props), she flies rock solid. I am upgrading to HQ-prop 10x5 now, eager to see what that is going to be like.

Very nice article! What about vibrations and shock resistance? My DT750 didn't enjoy some crash and are now vibrating pretty much...

I've crashed a few times but the motors just popped off because they are zipped tied on, so I'm not sure how good of a hit they could take but I do know that the DT750 stock bearings are kinda loose (my previous motors). Note you can buy replacement shafts for the DT750 on RCtimer, I don't remember the part number but look for 4mm shafts. And replacement bearings on hobbyking. Anyways the Sunnysky's seems to take a hit.

Nice review. And nice motor. Yet $27 pretty much covers the cost of all three motors for other decent budget motors that work great.

Hi MaxPower
thanks for your test!
I just ordered 4 of these motors.
I'm going to use them with 4s Lipo, do you still use them?
Can you suggest me a good prop config for this?
I plan to use HK blueseries 20A ESC, 17.8A in your test is too much?
Thanks again Pietro

Hi Pieri
I definitely still use them, still loving these motors, I would probably recommend 9" or 10"x4.5 prop, i haven't tried the motors with anything else yet but I do want to get some good quality Graupner props someday. So far they have been fine with the 20A ESCs and have had over 30+ flights on them. The ESCs do get warm but that is expected. 17.8A is fine as it is under 20A, if you are worried and want a bit more of a cushion and are not concerned with weight go with the Hobby King 30A ESCs.

Hi Max
I'm not so skilled in multicopters, I'm facing my first one indeed..
I bought 4 of these v2216-11 900kV and HK blueseries 20A
I'm waiting for them and I didn't order the lipos yet.
So some people on an italian forum told me that 4S is overpower for this motor and to go with 3S and 10x4,5" props, otherwise I'll probably loose flight time..
With 4S they told me to use 9x5 graupner props..
I calculated my 4copter will be 1.3-1.4Kg more or less, and it's an Hobbyking X550 Glass Fiber Quadcopter Frame.
What do you suggest?
Thanks again
Bye
Pietro

I went over the specs of the motors before I bought them and yes they do say 3s but I have ran them on 4s with no problems so far, but ask a simple question and you will get lots of different answers. In my test I think I get 1400grams of thrust I bench tested it with 10x4.5 @ 17.8amps which is under the 20A max of this motor. I also check to see how warm the motors are after a flight and they are only slightly warm so that is a good indicator as well. Your mileage may vary but so far things have been ok. Having said that I have flown with 3s with these motors and they are still excellent.

My suggestion is to go with 3s for you, as my copter is 1.8kg and I fly 3s with it sometimes and it flies great, I just like flying with 4s to make it go faster and push things alittle :). Just remember to get something with a good C rating you will want something around a 3300mah with 30C rating. 3.000 x 30 = 90amps continuous amp draw, which will be well above what your copter will drawn on 3s.

Great review, I bought these too and will soon use them on 4s on a TBS Discovery with gimball.
This was all the info I needed in order to buy the right ESC and prop combo, THANKS!
