Seagull Plane

Here's my experiment called the seagull plane. I got the idea from this "drone" a while back.

I wanted to see what this wing would be like and it is ok. The gliding is absolutely amazing but powered flight has some weird stuff to it. Specs are all in the video.

I may end up messing with this design because of how good it glides, maybe a front mounted motor and a full foam body would help.

Need to build it as a V tail next time! Great job.

looks like LOADS of drag.

If it flaps its wings, it is called an orthocopter. Great video.

OK, I knew the word started with "orth" but didn't know the rest lol.

have a look at the Art-tech Minimoa, has that sort of seagull wing

I agree with the drag comment, the airfoil looks a little too thick for a plane of that size and weight. To solve your wingtip lift problem, maybe you could change the downward bent sections to just straight foamboard so they are more aesthetic than functional. You wouldn't get as good of a glide, but maybe it would be a little easier to control. Good job though! It'd be cool if you painted it to look like a bird:)

Yea, I just threw this together as a little test, I wasn't looking for perfection:D

I forgot what the stuff is called, but if you build a second one, maybe install bendable wire on the joints of the wings. That way you can try a bunch of different angles for the dihedral and wing tips. Up close the wings look like the angle is too much, but far away it looks great. It's just a thought.

When I was building this actually, I was thinking of hinging the down-angled wingtips and hooking them some how to servos and mixing those servos with the aileron channel so when i say, bank to the left, the left wingtip servo pulls and lifts the left wingtip up and level so it doesn't loose lift in turns. Thanks for the suggestion:)
