So I made the decision to cover my FT Simple Storch in colored packing tape. After shortly starting the process I realized this was not going to look the way I had hoped. The tape was semi-transparent and it gave it a striped look when overlapped with other pieces of tape. I had no choice to finish it since I had nothing else flyable at the time.
Well, I decided to see if one could remove/un-tape a foamboard plane. Many people said it was not possible or recommended against it. Sure enough it is possible! Here's how:
Tools needed:
-plane/piece that you wanting to remove tape from
-razor blade
-needle nose pliers
-a heating iron (used for applying monokote/ultracote)
-patience! (definitely needed...especially if you want to untape a large section)
Steps:
1. Pick out the piece that you wish to start with.
2. Using a razor blade and needle nose pliers start carefully peeling up a piece of tape you wish to start with. You just need a piece big enough that you can grab with your fingers/pliers.
3. With a heating iron already warmed up to low-medium to medium heat, start applying heat to the section you are going to start peeling up. Be careful with the heat as we don't want to start burning foam and/or melting hot glue back to liquid form.
4. Once you feel comfortable with the heat being applied, SLOWLY start peeling up the tape. At this point, you can choose if you wish to peel with your fingers or pliers.
5. If it's a long strip of tape, you can peel with one hand, and guide the iron with the other hand (see video)
***I highly recommend trying this method with some scrap foam and scrap tape to make sure it's going to work for you. Not all tapes are created equal and some may require higher/lower temperature settings on the heating iron
