project BatCruzer

by brianm311 | October 12, 2014 | (17) Posted in Projects

ok so here it is the begining of project BatCruzer, plastic kids wiffle ball bat, when i saw this the wheels were instantly turning !!

after a couple measurements i reallized it's length was the same as the FTCruzer and the project was off!!

since the body length was the same all the measurements from the FT applied to this build

the cut for the wing and elevator are both on the mold line of the bat makeing it simple to keep them both level

the cuts were done with a sheetrock knife after the first score the blade cut right through the plastic with ease

the motor mount is screwed directly to the end of the bat with shims behind the motor flange for thrust angle.the motor is a gt 2820/04 with a e-max 45ampc esc running a 11.6 prop and an 11.1v lipo

here you can see the begining of the standard FTcruzer wing

i decided to try the waterproofing method from the flitetest video, but on my wing, elv and rudder instead of the body

here i am covering the bottom of the wing with the kraft paper and poly,( p.s dont pay no attention to the dates)

a little goes along way!!

wing sanded and ready for some paint!!

starting to look like a plane now!!

one last fit check before paint is applied!

wow this paints nice with the new surface!!

paint finished now it's ready for some graphics,,,hmmmmm what am i gonna paint on this one???

i placed the battery hatch in almost the same position as the cruzer as the battery will be in the same spot as well

for the battery tray i placed a sheet of foam bord on the top motor mount bolts and hot glued the other end on to the leading edge of the wing, hot glue bonds to this plastic very well!!

i placed the rudder servo on top wasn't sure if it would weaken the body if they were placed directly across from one another

here you can see the elev servo installed,

all thats left now are my ailerons and some "pop"

here it is with some graphics applied to give it that "pop" it neede to make it shine!!

for my cowling i used a one litre soda bottle, She's ready for a maiden!!

one satisfied builder/pilot!!!!

Very original build! I hope it gives some inspiration to the other builders (including myself). I would love to see more ideas.

WOW! I've walked though stores looking for bottles to cutup for cowlings but never thought of looking for something to make a cool looking fuse. Peter indicated that he did not recommend the polyurethane method for covering wings, did yours give you any grief? Thx for sharing.

thank you!! as far as waterproofing the wing i found that on the wing itself i had no issues, that said i also build my wing with a foam spar and a wooden 3\8 or 5\16 dowel on top of the foam spar i just cut down the foam and add the dowel for the difference, i did find that doing it on the single pieces of foam it had a tendency to warp it so what i did is left one small section of kraft paper dry in a small spot on one side so i could put weight there since you can only do one side at a time it worked well and solved the warping issue again thank you!!

Anyone else having trouble getting the video to play? I haven't had a bit of luck with the video since it was posted! What a shame-- Would have loved to watch the bat in flight. My congratulations on the creative imagination of the builder. The flite-test community never ceases to amaze me.

Brianm 311; sorry to bother you again but I just copied and pasted the link to you tube and got a message that states "no result found". I'm at a total loss to figure out the "what or why" of this problem. Perhaps someone will find a solution and post it in this comments section. Anyway, thanks for trying.

Brianm 311; just before I signed off, I chanced trying the link in your original article one more time. I'm happy to report that the video now works. Can only add--she flies as good as she looks, which is pretty damn good!
