P-51D Mustang - Build, Tune, Fly!

by FliteTest | March 12, 2014 | (16) Posted in How To

Welcome to our very first Build, Tune, Fly! We are taking a closer look at the P-51D Mustang from our Weekender Warbirds episode.

The first step is, obviously, BUILD!

This goes together extremely easily and the provided instructions do a great job of explaining everything.

This plane goes together with no glue or tape. Everything either fits tight or is screwed together.

Once the plane is put together, you want to TUNE!

These are the recommended rates Josh likes to use. Each has its advantages and disadvantages but use whichever is most comfortable for you.

This is also where you would check your throws and make sure left = left, right = right, etc.

Now for the most fun part. FLY!

Also, if you are going to belly land, remove the drop tanks!

We hope this gives you an idea of how this P-51 Weekender Warbird sets up. We really enjoyed this plane and hope you do to!

Good job! I really like it! Would you consider doing a Build, Tune, Fly for the Bixler 2?
Thanks!

Excellent. I would suggest having the manufacturer name in the title or description of the youtube vid so people will find it when researching it. Also in future maybe look at some of the upgrades people typically do. like, will that ESC handle a 3 cell battery?

Great video! I definitely appreciated the specific details on basic techniques, like hand launch and landings!

I really like the new format for the build, tune, fly. Lots of good info for the viewers! My only complaints would be more planes in the air for the maiden than just the Mustang. I kind of find it hard to focus on which one it is while they were flying. By the time I found it, the shot was changing and I didn't get to see it fly much :( love all the build vids tho. Keep it up Flite Test. And of course, Thank you so much for all you do on camera and off.

Really like the format. Plane looks great to may have to get me one. Will it handle a 3 cell? Would love to see how much more speed it could get .

Thanx Josh, enjoyed the video. Next time how about a T-28 or J3 Cub.

Is it just me, or does anyone else see a scratchbuild Mustang behind him?

This episode really should be called "Assemble, Tune, Fly."

After you guys have done enough of these type of nearly-ready-to-fly planes, I think it would be great if you moved onwards and upwards with some (slightly) more challanging assemblies.
For example: the E-Flite Taylorcraft 450 like Chad's. The process would be fascinating to those who only know foam and DTF and the details of a more intermediate build are great lessons to be learned.
Once built, then you tune (trim) the plane and then you could start talking about mixes on the Tx for high wing planes like the Taylorcraft 450, Apprentice, Super Cub etc.. and what they are doing and why.
I would love to see/read/learn all about that.

Keep up the great work.

btw...in the video, Josh centers the servos with a Tactic 650 Tx and then flies with a DX18......what up like that?
