Nyuki 100 Brushless Indoor Micro Drone

THE IDEA

The inspiration for the Nyuki came from the desire to have a small indoor brushless FPV drone. I was tired of the lack of power with brushed indoor copters and I didn’t like that the brushed motors only lasted so long. Another thing that I wanted this small copter to have was protection for the circularly polarized antenna on the small FPV cam VTX combos. Thus the Nyuki 100 was born.

FEATURES

  • Brushless Power
  • True 90 degree X frame
  • Can run any 11xx size motors with standard 9mm mounting pattern.
  • Fly up to 2.5” propellers
  • Compact FPV backpack with cam angle between 15-20 degrees.
  • Integrated antenna protection
  • Super strong one piece main frame
  • Super small fly anywhere size
  • AUW (w/500mah 2s lipo): 94g

BUILDING AND TESTING THE FIRST NYUKI

The first prototype was cut out on my companies CNC machine. The build was very fast mainly due to the Piko BLX. Having and integrated PDB and FC made the build very simplified. I flashed the Piko BLX with Betaflight and then started tuning. I wasn’t getting the performance I wanted, in fact it was flying really bad… I did some troubleshooting and found the problem to be the ESCs. They were some old 7A ESCs using PWM communication that did not even have OneShot protocal. The ESCs were very unresponsive and would not react fast enough. The commands from the flight controller were so delayed that the quad was flying terrible. I swapped the ESCs for some Aikon 30A SEFM BLHeli-S ESCs (overkill I know) and the quad flew great! Moral of the story is to use high quality ESCs.

I was having a blast with this little quad. I could practically fly it anywhere due to its size. I was flying it in my house, at small parks with cool sculptures, inside my office and more. After a week of flying I had a bad upside down crash which caused the antenna protection on the side plate to break on the first prototype. Even though the carbon broke it still protected the antenna. So the next day I cut out side plate V2 with a bit more strength for the antenna protection and I haven’t had an issue yet even with similar crashes.

FLYING CHARACHTERISTICS

Given that this micro drone is running Betaflight and BLHeli-S, it really does fly like a larger 5” quad. Indoors the 2s power is more than enough. It performs better than any Tinny Whoop with upgraded motors that I have ever flown. It flips and rolls so gracefully and is super locked in. Outside the 2s setup lacks power in wide open spaces, but it really shines when you stick close to obstacles and try some precision flying through small gaps. I currently have parts coming for a 3s Nyuki setup that should be great outdoors.

CONCLUSION

The Nyuki is a great indoor copter on 2s with some great potential for outdoor performance on 3s. I have really been enjoying flying this little copter. It is super nimble and very durable. I am also very excited to announce that the Nyuki is available for everyone at Armattan Productions (link below)!

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

After getting some feedback from the community on RCGroups, I have been working on a few optional parts for the Nyuki. In the near future I will offer a thinner 1.5mm main plate to make the frame even lighter, provide removable propeller guards and offer a frame with integrated propeller guards. If there is anything else you would like to see added let me know and I can consider designing it and making it available.

Cool quad loving the brushless power compared to brushed. Looking at a kit but it looks like your in America. Still an awsome design.

Thanks. I am currently living in Saudi Arabia but I am from the States.

Could you use this motor and ESC combo for this quad?

According to Furious FPV, the Piko BLX sounds like it only works FrSky, and I have a Spektrum transmitter. Any suggestions to this predicament? P.S I'm a total nood to building quads, this one peaked my interest because of its lower price.
Thanks in advance.

The Piko BLX supports Spektrum Satellite transmitters (it has the plug on the bottom). More info about it in the manual (page 4): http://furiousfpv.com/dev/Piko%20BLX%20FC%20Manual.pdf

I just got my kit and I was going through the contents and realized that the cross beams for the camera mount were not included so where could I get some, a standoff kit?

Also, any small camera & vtx combos that can take a 2s, I've found this to be the hardest to find part on the list.

Hey Leahcim,

Thanks for purchasing the frame. To answer your first questions, unfortunately Armattan Productions does not stock the three 20mm standoffs needed to complete the kit... On the page for the Nyuki I have a reminder for people to purchase their own but I guess some people are not seeing it. Below are two links to some standoffs you could purchase, there are many other places to get them as well.

As for the micro camera VTX combo you can plug that into the 5V output on the flight controller. The Piko BLX has a 2a 5V regulator built in that works perfect for powering the camera.

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Ryan

I do have another question, I'm planning on using Furious FPV's 1103 motors which are used on their Moskito 70 http://furiousfpv.com/product_info.php?products_id=201
My question is, will Furious Fpv's 45mm props be large enough for the Nyuki?

45mm motors on the 1103 10000kv with 2S might be a little under-powered. The copter really shines on 1105 4000-6500kv motors and the furious 2435 props.
