My New FPV Transmitter 9x mod.

by TommyGunn | April 10, 2013 | (32) Posted in Projects

I wanted to change the firmware on the 9x then i got bored and wanted to add the frsky to make it a better radio.
So i have the fatshark googles but i also wanted to add a 7 in monitor to my rig.
But i wanted to use the same power as the battery so i snaked it thru the old antenna hole. you can see the power wire mesh cables in the pictures. but i wanted to more directed leads so i had to open up the monitor and add my own cables.

Then i wanted to have kinda a NASA looking tx so i took everything apart and made it white.

This is inside the monitor. just had to find the video in and power in.

  +9+;

monitor now mounted

Then decided to flash

I made my own plugs with some pins rows i found.

checking to make sure all wires are correct.

a couple of drops of hot glue so wires don't pull out.

shaping hot glue.

add a nub to mach the cable so i dont forget which way to plug it in.

perfect match!

Soldered wires to board checked it 3 times. better safe than sorry!

now flashing...

Done!

error is normal and  reboot..good bye 9x!...HELLO ER9X!

ok Now i got bored with the radio so i decided to take everything apart and paint it,

I masked most of it any thing i miss can be remover with a q tip and some actone.

4 coats

I tought it would dry fast it drys to the touch in 1 hour but it take 7 days to get solid.

weather is soo nice i decide to put it back together after 3 days. i am painting another one fire engine red if i mess this one up.

Hoston... we have a go!  for monitor!

everything is working ER9X looks good!

You can see wher i snake the power from the radio battery out the antenna hole.

the monitor mount is from http://polakiumengineering.org

the yellow plug is the monitor power that connects to the tx power.

I dremeled the pin mount shorter to fit my fr-sky pack and removed the aa batterypack and added a lipo battery.

battery connected with new plug and shrink tubing.

Connect plug.

Battery fit like a glove!

Now I added a Sun visor.

This should work!

Added my logo and mug shot to the radio to make really custom made!

Radio before paint job.

Hope you like my radio!

The battery as a long time i recharge the battery every few weeks.
the battery was like 12.00 i just cut the leads off the AA battery tray and solder them on to the lipo battery and plugged it it the battery fits like glove! but do try to charge the battery thru the tx!!! you have to charge like any other lipo battery for this battery i have a small 2-3 cell balancing charger i got from one of my efilte models and i just plug the balance plug in and i am good to go.
this is the battery i use.

A couple of things actually..
first i am going change the antenna to a 7fb antenna when they come back in stock should add more distance or at least a stronger connection.
other ideas i am thing about is adding another 3 position switch the 9x only has 1 most radio only have 1 unless it is very $$$$.
and i am toying around the idea of adding voices to the tx so it talks to you like warnings, time switches etc. ie " gps engaged" Battery low" "manual mode engaged"

I have lots of monitors and such, been flying FPV from a monitor for years, but I bought a mount to put it on the TX and I hated it. I much rather a monitor be on a separate stand while I am sitting down. I have a nice carbon fiber monitor mount to sell now, it was a worthless experiment. I don't think it's a good idea to switch to LOS while in FPV, it fosters bad habits that are hard to break and lead to crashes. It's best to just keep you eyes on the monitor, sit down and relax. I have a feeling these TX monitor mounts will not gain popularity. just my 2 cents. I do love the white color though, that's cool..

Have you flown FPV with a monitor on your TX yet? I tried it and couldn't stand it, it was impossible..

I have a full sun visor not pictured but to starting out fpv'ing your not locked in the goggles.
so it helps teach you with out losing line of sight. as long as you not directly under the sun it best to be like under a tree or someplace shady. I also can remove it and let my friends watch while i use the the fatshark. and if anything else... it impressed the hell of people!

Yep i know what you mean but the angle does not bother me i sit on a bench with the tx on my lap.
but i am using goggles more now and if you notice the blue velcro that is for a battery when i remove the monitor from tx i just pop a battery on the back of it and then people can share it or mount it on tripod. the monitor cost me like 32.00 bucks.

I do have a Naza gps! :) i have tested this is a football size space it get stat icy but not had a blue screen of death it goes blue if there nothing plugged in to the video. But i still would not trust fpv any further unless i had a diversity antenna setup even tho i have also fatshark googles. with immersion 600mw. but i will give it a test soon to see the real range. will let you know. see new picture on the bottom of the full rig.
