My FPV flights at the Nockalmstraße in Austria

by misterx | December 22, 2013 | (0) Posted in Just Fun

Last summer I went to Austria with my girlfriend for the holiday. Because I just completed my upgrade to the APM 2.5 flight controler I wanted to bring the Tricopter with me to fly in another surrounding then at home and try to make some great FPV footage. I flown a total of 6 FPV flights, 4 around the house and 2 at the Nockalmstraße. I wanted to make more flights but I had forgotten the transformer for my batterycharger! so I had to use one standart appliance transformer with an maximum output of 1.2 amps. So after a flight it took some time to charge everything back up again.......

The first video is a compilation of my 2 flights at the Nockalmstraße, the second video is from around the house. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoyd making them.

Pretty nice! Loving the drum and bass as well on the mountain video. Any plans for a winter version?

Thnx!!

I have been snowboarding the first week of this year and brought the tricopter with me. Unfortunately I catched a pretty bad cold and skipped a day outside. So I have flown a few battery's around one mountain peak near the pistes, but not as many as I had hoped!

I wil take the nice scenes out and see if it is worth making a video of it!

pretty beautiful country indeed. It's a shame I don't live there myself. but the flat land of the netherlands gives other nice features:D Still planned a few FPV sessions near the sea and the dunes for a nice video

Pretty nice landscapes! My tip would be to lower the P and I gain a little bit as your tricopter is a bit too much rolling when you're in transition. And are your ESC with SimonK's firmware upgraded? It might help also to stabilize your tricopter :) Keep going

Great advice, I'm indeed still tuning the APM but could not get it more stable. those last wobbles are difficult to get out!

and about the simonK, is that also possible with the plush 25A that I use?? I've been searching for it about one year ago but could not find it and stopped looking!

I know it's not easy to tune APM. But as seen as you have telemetry, you can do it on the field. Try to play a bit with those settings. But of course lowering P and I gain will also lower the stability of the model in hovering mode.
For flashing the plush ESCs, yes it's possible with PLUSH ones. Check for example this article:

Have fun!

Correct, I have the telemetry upgrade. at the moment the tri is doing a great job with hovering.

I just did some research and I ordered 3, 30 AMP HK blue ESC's and the atmel programmer. so i wil upgrade the tri with new ESC's. It's needed also because I take too much power during high power settings, the telemetry says I use around 100 amps burst, way too much for the 3, 25 amp plush!!!

Get directly the Afro serie ones. They are already simonk firmware flashed!
But for such a tricopter 100A is impossible from my point of view. Check what you have on hovering and take it times 3 for burst rate you need. With mine, maybe a bit lighter as it's a Tricopter 2.5, weight 1.1kg, I use between 10 and 15A in hovering, so 45A max. I can use there 18A ESC without any fear to let them fry. Double check your hovering current needed. I don't think your tri is 5kg! ;)

I considered the afro ones but from the cost point of view the blue from HK are cheaper. even inc the needen cable for flashing, and then I have the oppertunity to flash more ESC's if I like!

The telemetry shows around 23 amps during a stable hover. I don't know the weight of the tri:P will measure it one of these days. I think around 1.5 KG.

One other thing is that the ESC's don't become extremely hot after some intense flying. sow I think I have to test the max Amps with an external amp meter and see if it matches up with the telemetry values. If not, maybe the telemetry callibration is off or something like that.

good stuff to take in consideration, THNX
