I have now been flying solo for quite a while, but never have I flown a 4 channel plane. I have had the FT mini scout and the FT mini arrow, which have completely different flying characteristics. This is due to the fact that the arrow is elevons and the scout rudder. Also, their body shape is quite considerably different. So, I decided to build a FT mini mustang.
After this decision I went round to Dan's, who marked out the plane. Although I have just started to mark out my own planes, Dan has experience and quickness. This was because I was eager to get building. The build and air to air video is below.
Here are some pictures of the build. Apologies for christmas wrapping.
Components
This model was built out of depron due to weight, however this meant that building techniques were slightly more challenging. If you are delecate with the depron, then the outcome is unbelievable and you will have such a nice model to fly.
Wing
To support the wing, I added some tape to the edges which stopped them from cracking.
Finished
As you will have seen from the video, I decided to go with a traditional paint job, silver with a red tail and nose end. I topped it off with some homemade roundels and a black posterboard canopy. With some scale flying to go with this, it made the mustang brilliant in the air when Dan followed it with his quad.
I was impessed by the flight characteristics of the model. It tracked nice and straight and was responsive while still being easy and an absloute blast to fly around. Dan was impressed with its ease to follow with the quad. His only complaint was that it was too fast at times and quad on 3s was streched at best. It has a good stall characteristic so it is easy to land yet can still fly at scale speeds and get shifting sometimes.
Here is a picture of the mustang from the air
We powered the mustang off a Multistar elite 2204 motor, 18 amp esc and a 500 mah battery. We thought that it was slightly under gunned on power and would like to fit a 30C battery rather than a 20C one for more juice in the climb.
I hope to carry on flying this model as it is a step up from my previous experience, yet still easy and fun to fly. I also want to get Dan's big mustang up with it and fly in Formation because that would also look cool. Another thing that I like about the plane is that it is an actual plane that exists and with the paint job looks so realistic.
Thanks for reading,Charlie from PS/RC
