An FT STEM Build 2 Fly Learning Strand Exemplar

7th grade student Kelly and her FT Viggen Build

To the Flite Test Community,

Another cool Build 2 Fly project was ready for maiden this past week, built and painted by 7th grade student Kelly Stucky. Proving already to be an elite builder in the class, she stepped it up a notch and created the FT Viggen.  The build for Kelly didn't seem to stump her and she thought it was very easy and fun, stating..."I am starting to get the hang of this stuff!" Any time a student tells me this it means that they are ready to move on and begin either tinkering with an existing design or engineering and designing their own project.

For Kelly, she has a huge interest in solar energy, and saw a few examples done on the internet with the use of solar panels on planes.  For her next adventure, which will be Inquiry and Design within the FT STEM curriculum, she is going to take an existing FT plane and re-engineer it to accomodate the use of solar panels. This should make for a very interesting build and science experiment dealing with solar panels.  This area is all so new to me, so if there is any awesome FT community member out there that has an idea of what panels to use and all that is needed to set this up, it would be very much appreciated.  Below are some panels she is thinking about: http://directvoltage.com/1x3-solar-cells/42-20pcs-1x3-polycrystalline-solar-cells-grade-a.html

These panels are what she is reworking to fit the plane, 1x3"

Kelly presenting her awesome FT-Viggen build, her camo paint job is awesome, we might have to revist this and get her painting techniques.

Kelly played a huge role in the design and creation of the FT Bravo!

Kelly seen here showing me her connections and how she mounted all her electronics. We always make sure that all electronics work properly and safely secured.

She said the kinards gave her the most issues, other then that, a pretty quick build, she completed it in a week.

Come on Mr. Marshall make sure you throw it right....NO PRESSURE!

All smiles and she did a pretty good job flying the beast!

Thank you for reading and watching and as mentioned in the second paragraph, if any community members can give us some advice with solar panels on planes, that would be awesome!

I think that it would be cool to put it on an FT Explorer or Simple Soarer! Great build and paint job!
