HK Tricopter Talon with Multistar motors

by swisscopter | April 8, 2013 | (6) Posted in Projects

Few months ago I bought few Multistar motors from HobbyKing, the 390kv and 420kv, 22 poles. I thought about updating my Talon Tricopter frame by installing longer arms and new motors.

The Talon frame is very strong and all carbon made, but it's for 16x19mm motors. So, you have to custom design an adapter if you want to mount Multistar motors.

I started taking the measurements, and put together in Rhino a layout of the motor mount, which I then loaded into Xpert Mill for milling few of those

This is what I came up with. This adapter is milled from a 3mm thick aluminium plate. The picture shows the motor mount with the 4 16x19 holes threaded, and the 3 outer countersunk holes for the motors

Some details showing how the adapter is put on the Talon motor mount

Turned upside down, this shows how the motor adapter holes match the motor ones.

Finally the adapter installed on the tail motor mount nicely in place. I also use thrust bearings to minimise vibrations

And her you can see how the adapter has been installed on the 2 front motor mounts

The end result is great. A very stable Tricopter which I fly with GoPro and KK board, 14x8'' Graupner eProps, HK FY-30A flashed ESCs, and 4S 6000 25C Nanotech.

With this setup you get a very smooth flights and can over for about 20min.

the adapter can be installed on DJI arms as shown in the picture above. Of course, if you intend to use the Multistar motors on these arms you would just go with the 610-690kv ones, possibly on 4cells. with 9" through 12" props.

If anyone is interested, I can provide the adapter and the screws as set.

Hope you like it! greetings from Switzerland

The adapter looks sweet. Can you provide some data as to the weight (screws and adapter)? Any idea what shipping costs would be to Wisconsin, USA and what you want for the adapters? Thanks much, Steve

Thanks Steve.
The adapter comes at around 4gr , and the screws are standard countersunk M3 and so is the hole thread of the motors. I also used M3 for the 4 inner holes because it's the standard for the 16x19mm pattern, and fits nicely with the talon motor mount as well
The 7 screws together weight about 1.5 gr. I can check what the shipping would be. I guess registered airmail is the way to go for up to 100gr...

hope this helps, regards

Hi Dan, I lost my link to this post so it took me a bit to find it again; i.e., sorry for the slow response. My motors are on back order so I'm going to wait to make sure they will come through before moving forward. I really like this mount and your article is very informative and clear. Hopefully, I will be following up on this in the very near future. Have you thought about the cost or how you would handle payments? If you want to contact me through (remove spaces) "steves spam store @ gmail . com" I will forward my regular email address.
Thanks again,
Steve

Hi Dan,

I looked at your article and I am very interested. My compliments for the design and C&C job!
Recently I bought six Multistar 610's that I want to mount on my F550.
This is exactly the adapter plate that I would need.
Could you kindly help me out?
Much appreciate!

Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,

Dirk
