Headplay HD RX On/Off Switch

If your like me you use your Headplay HD goggles for more than just fpv. I like to play xbox on them (wife gets the tv and can watch what she wants). I have noticed that the receiver gets very hot after being on for a short amount of time. I looked online and couldn't find anything as far as a mod or solution to the problem so I decided to take them apart and do it myself. This is the first time I have documented taking something apart like this but I hope it helps you all solve a problem/issue. So here we go

Start by taking the goggles apart like you are going to change the lens. It's very simple just remove the 4 Phillips screws from the corners. Gently separate the top half and bottom half of the goggles making sure that the screen stays in the top half. I left my lens in the bottom half and set it aside that half is not needed best to keep it away from dust.

Once you have the screen in the top half of the goggles. you will see 2 screws inside the goggles. unscrew them so you can gently remove the top half of the plastic. be careful the hdmi chip and receiver are attached to this plastic.

Carefully remove the 4 screws from the corners and then gently unplug all the cables taking note of which goes to what port and in what direction. the big black connector could be put on in reverse so pay attention.

Carefully remove the 3 screws holding the receiver down. (In my case they had melted the plastic out around them so they had no purchase) once you have the receiver out you will be able to see the wire we are going to cut to install the switch on.

I took a switch out of my old jr radio and used it. I'm sure if your attempting this modification you can find a switch that will work.

I used a spot in the corner for my switch so it would not interfere with putting the goggles back together.

I installed my switch and then soldered new wire to it.There is plenty of room for a fine tip to get in there. Cut the 5v wire and solder the wires to each side of the switch. Cover everything with heatshrink.

close the goggles back up taking extra care to not pinch any of the wires.

Now is the time to check if the screen or lens needs to be cleaned if not put them back together.

Congratulations you can now play hdmi without powering the 5.8rx. I'm very happy with the end result. I was a bit worried about cracking open a set of brand new goggles to try a modification with no guide, but I have learned a lot from this site and the Flitetest channel.

I did this modification because the heat coming from the receiver worries me. It gets really hot and that can't be good on it, there are also a lot of us out there that are just using the hdmi port. Whether it's the Lightbridge users , Connex users, or people playing games, there is no sense wasting power on the 5.8 receiver and causing heat damage if you're not using it. I think Headplay could have added a switch to the goggles but, I can't complain to much  they are an amazing set of goggles at a great price.
