Graupner X44 VTOL

by FliteTest | October 26, 2015 | (8) Posted in Reviews

The Graupner X44 is a VTOL that tilts its motors to obtain conventional fixed wing flight.

The design is simple and approachable.

Instead of changing motor speed to move forward, the X44 tilts all four of its motors and keeps the airframe level while flying in plane mode.

We were worried that the X-44 would be difficult to fly during transition, but those concerns where quickly answered with its gentle characteristics.

While we tested the X-44 in heavy wind this plane performs best on calm days.

The x-44 is unique to say the least.  But it is clear that Graupner has taken a huge step forward in making VTOL both approachable and enjoyable.

This model is only available in Europe and you can see the product info page HERE. If this is something that you'd like to see in the US let Graupner know! As always thank you for being a part of the Flite Test Family!

I suppose that you could weigh the model down to make it penetrate the wind better, but that would mean the VTOL function would be eliminated, as the motors don't have that much power.

It looks like the model is a good idea in theory, but the actual product has some flaws. It's definitely not worth the current price.

I enjoyed this episode! Something is different about the quality of the video in this episode (i believe it's better)? Did you guys use a different camera (or is it just me)?

We have been recently shooting in 60 FPS which is probably what you are noticing. We are shooting on GH4s which we switched to a few months ago. :) -Austin
