Glider Project Gone Wrong!

To the FliteTest Community;
The content that we show on our channel usually displays our best work. However, due to some requests not only from viewers, but students, they wanted to see projects that doesn't go as plan. There is a lot of learned lessons in the MESArcFF Program, this particular episode shows Ty trying to convert a store bought glider into an functioning aircraft. Lets just say we will be moving on to the latest FliteTest glider as our next project, lol.

Very funny, watch and enjoy.

really unfortunate what happened to your plane. if you're wanting to convert it to an rc glider, i'd suggest the first thing would be to build it as a chuck glider (as i assume thats what it was ment for originally) then find the CG, mark it. then all you have to do then is make sure the CG lines up with your mark once you've got all your gear on board. it 'should' then fly nicely.

Yes we did exactly what you described, however, the student doing a modern dance move over the plane wasn't to plan. He is already starting on the next plane, will relay the info over to him. Thanks for watching.

A converted Chuck glider will not necessarily perform the same. Depending on the overall wing area, if you add your RC parts and you increase the Wing loading too much, then there isn't enough lift for the glider to fly like a glider and it will not perform.

That is perfect advice and will let Ty know. This explains the control issues we were having, though it flew, we did not have the control we really wanted out of it. Thanks for the valuable information.

Great video guys! :) - I particularly liked the impromptu break-dancing (full marks to the camera-man(woman) for getting it all on film). I've been lucky with most of my builds but I've also got a couple of real lemons that I keep taking to the field and wrecking. I haven't had a decent flight out of either of them - but that doesn't stop me from fixing them up, changing a few settings and trying again. The thing to remember (and you know this already) - is it's all part of the learning experience. From strength and suitability of materials right through to how to hand-launch a glider (LOL) - I'm sure every one of your students came away from the exercise having gained something. Importantly you also demonstrated that you DON'T give up after the first failure. This is a great program - keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words, will relay over to Ty, and yes he is not done. He has already started on his next glider project, learning from this planes mistakes.

Thanks,

Awesome! Ive always wanted to do this. Flitetest, if you're listening. making a cheap store bought foam glider fly with rc controls would make for a good vid.

Love you guys. you are spreading the hobby one student at a time... Fly on!.. Fly on!!..
