An FT STEM Top Flight School

Every Friday I try to provide an engaging problem for students and teachers to use in their classrooms on our FT STEM Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/ftstem/.  A couple of weeks ago we presented this problem to the community;

There is a lot of learning tangents that this particular project provides besides teaching about the physics of flight.  Mentioning just a few;

  • Thrust to weight ratio, how much can the Apprentice carry?
  • Concept of gliders
  • Engineering and Designing a glider to be mounted on an Apprentice aircraft.
  • Basic electronics setup on aircraft and release mechanism.
  • Engineering and Designing a release mechanism.
  • Basic concept of flight, control surface physics, release point, etc.
  • Team work and community through flight.
8th grade student Zac, seen in the picture above, designed an rc powered glider for this problem, and his aircraft proved to be a great fit for the specifications given. We threw a twist on it, however, bringing more individuals in on the fun. We placed the release controls on a seperate transmitter, meaning another student was in charge of releasing the aircraft.  Another student of coarse flew the aircraft, and the last student had to try and catch the aircraft before it touched ground. Watching the video the third proved to be the most difficult, something to practice on in the future!

Here are some pics of the project;
The release mech is looslely based on the one used in a past Flite Test episode https://youtu.be/0q-un2Crhls

The whole setup!

Back shot of the glider resting on the release mechanism.

Its ready for takeoff!

As you can see the setup worked great and it was easy to perform the task of mounting and releasing the glider.

Ground shot of Kyle just misjudging the glider flying above!

Jill a little nervous about trying to catch the plane!

All praise Zac for engineering and designing a glider that brought us all together on a beautiful Friday afternoon!

We are very proud of Zac and the team for executing this project.  We plan to do more of these involving other student designed gliders, it was way to much fun!

Thanks guys for tuning in and supporting our program and FT STEM.
