Easy Swappable Air Hogs chuck glider.

This is not the first r/c conversion but may be the first Swappable Air Hogs r/c conv.. You can build this in one afternoon easily and is a blast to fly. And uses a power pod from one of the FT Swapables.  The Air Hogs titan glider is a well built $10 chuck glider sold a Walmart and Target. Just as a glider alone it will fly a good 75yds. The foam is fairly durable and takes low temp hot glue without a problem.

In flight:  On a tiny 1300kv 24g motor the titan cruises around at half throttle effortlessly and at wot will climb and flip with a little work. The stall speed is low so great for small parks.

Build: As you can see I cut out, sanded and notched out the whole bottom front of the plane to fit the power pod. Added BBQ skews in the front and rear to lock it all in. Two 9gr servos for elev and rudder. I used scrap foam board for the control surfaces. And I put clear shipping tape on the leading and trailing edges to stiffen everything up. I opted not to glue the main wings as the will snap if it takes a good dirt nap. C/G is about 1/3 from the front of the wing cord. I had to use two pennies in the tail to get a good balance.

Specs: Hextronic 24g 1300kv motor

           18amp plush speed control

            500mah zippy lipo =10min flight

            8x6 SF apc prop

            2x Hextronic 9r servos

Thanks for reading, If you build this you wont regret it, its a blast and easy to fly, ask my 8yr old son.

Any questions or if I missed something don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers.

Really simple and clever. I have a couple of chuck gliders I may make a pod for as you have done. Thanks for the idea!

Tmask,

Picked one up this evening, and plane glides well with a stock CG at ~2/3 cord from the root LE. Seemed far back to me, but it does have a strong back sweep.

How's yours handling at 1/3? I'd hate to go though all the trouble of mounting parts only to need add weight farther back.

Also, are you running 2 or 3 cell?

craftydan, I am running a 3cell, all the way to the back of the power pod. I've found if I dont use the landing gear and put two pennies in the tail it flys gr8. It is a little nose heavy though. So you are right, I just never checked the cg before i built it ,so it was a guessing game for me. But I bet if you put the battery right behind the power pod it might balance out even better. cheers

TMask,

I embedded a 3s 1000 just behind the stock CG, bringing it back to between 1/2 and 2/3 cord. Glide tests were still a touch nose heavy, but better than without the battery. Control surfaces and servo mount similar and I'm using the turnigy brand of the same motor w/ a 8x4.3 prop (tested at 390g thrust). AUW is 425g.

Had to build an extension cord and carve on foam, but moving the battery backwards did help on glide. Not that you'd trust it after you hear about the maiden.

Not sure if I'm fighting trim, excessive throttle, or just plane noob-ness, but on maiden, it had a wicked roll. Maybe the touch of left thrust angle was way too gentle. Either way, between another broken prop and setting sun, I'm back to licking my wounds (and considering ailerons).

I am trying to upload a vid now so u can see how she flys.I didnt have any problems with roll , actually it flew almost without any trim. I can tell u that I did not use any thrust angle, and the power pod is parallel to the other horizontal surfaces. Maybe its because I used a 500mah battery. If there is any measurments ypu need or more pictures , let me know. Good luck, Oh also I tried a 7x5e prop and it was a lot faster.

Tried again, and well, better, sorta.

My rudder is anemic (~2in -- needs more!), coupled w/ WOT, it spun on the prop and rudder couldn't correct. Dropped a size on the prop (7x3.5) and reduced throttle to a tick above 1/2. still couldn't turn well, but elev (also ~2in) was strong. no problem turning via Immelman -- it rolls easy to self correct.

unfortunately met with the ground one too many times:

Now to find my gorilla glue and packing tape . . .

What a cool idea! Mounting the swappable pod with an existing airframe opens up all kinds of possibilities.

cool idea mounting a swappable, wish I saw this yesterday as I just finished digging out the foam and building it with ailerons and no rudder and some bixlar wheels for touch and go's. Just did a test flight and it flys great, not bad for $10.
