Custom Laser Cut Y6

Hi guys, this is my first post here at flitetest, though I've been lurking and watching the videos for a while. I've also been following David for quite a while at rcexplorer, and even have one of the v2.5 tricopters he built! (though it has been rebuilt a number of times..)

So about my Y6.. I had recently gotten a hobby laser from fslaser.com but hadnt really made anything particularly useful. Before seeing the anycopter design, I figured plywood was not suitable for multicopter frame design. Seeing the anycopter, I was inspired to go ahead try to make something myself. If it worked, It would be really cool, if not.. well after seeing you guys do it, I knew it would work! LOL

Here a pic prior to my first LOS flight:

And here is my first FPV flight:

Ok, so that wasn't much of a flight.. It really does fly well, but the wind had blown over my ground station and I crashed, which sort of defeats one of the reasons I use a groundstation and monitor rather than goggles..

Maybe that's something to practice? FPV deadstick type landings or recovery?

I've almost got it rebuilt and ready to fly again thanks to easily being able to swap out wooden arms. I've got more details on damage and rebuild here. I've also recently started a blog to keep track of this and other various project progress. All my y6 posts can be found here.

Thanks!!

I looked at your site. I don't want to rain on your parade but I'll do it anyway! lol

While the copter looks cool with all the cnc'ed wood the first thought that came to my mind was 'waayyy overbuilt'. You must have a ton of screws, and wood, in it, which must be making it very heavy. For me 'KISS' work best.

Thanks for the input! I actually agree. I had all kinds of ideas for making everything modular, and other features, but after taking a step back it looks a little over engineered. I'm going to explore some simplicity, and maybe some other materials in the next iteration of the design.

need something like the ardunio that you can switch into a loiter mode real quick then you could have saved it from going down

Its something anyone with a cnc mashine of 3d printer does, and thats overbuild, but thats just fine.. The hobby is design, build and fly. Everyone likes one of the 3 steps more that the other 2. Personaly I like to just take the shortest route to fly.. But other build amazing flying machines to hang in the garage, and some just fiddels overdesign and keep adding..

You're tricopter looks stnning.. Hope to see some better landings..

Thanks! Yeah without proper knowledge of how strong each part would or needed to be I erred on the side of 'definitely strong enough' and figured the extra lift would take care of it. I too just wanted to get it in the air, and went to town to build it to just get it done. Now I can simplify from my findings, and redesign it as needed.

I hope to be making better landings next time!
