Carbon Fiber Wolverine

To the FliteTest Community:

This episode features the students working on our Protech Wolverine project that is sponsored by Protech Composites.  A couple weeks back the Olson brothers over at Protech made a commitment to team up with us in a partnership as well as to conduct a project that has never been seen before, a scratch built remote control RC plane made of nothing but Carbon Fiber materials. The students learned a lot about the material, how to work with it as well as being safe.  The plane came out great and from a modelers stand point, a work of art.  The MESA team did an exceptional job on this project and we thank the Protech Team for allowing us to do such a project.

Absolutely beautiful plane but I bet that amount of carbon fiber is not cheap. I just love that carbon look though and I hope you dont lose signal if your receiver is buried inside that frame. I look forward to seeing the next part, looks like on your launch its gonna need correcting pronto. Best wishes from Essex, UK

I would assume too, however, Protech sponsored the whole thing, fabricated the sheets and sent them over to us to play with. It has been a real cool assignment for the students.

Really nice look....So how did it fly? And how did it hold up in a crash? Looks like you were about to go nose into the ground right after you cut off the video there at the end.

It flew heavy and since it is such a heavy plane I was scared to see what it was capable of with a 4 cell around houses. We did take it to a nearby farm land and opened it up and it screamed. We did crash it the first flight, minor scratches, fixed it and flew it again. Video to come out soon. Thanks

Looks amazing! How much does the finished plane weigh?

(Couldn't see any dust suckers attached to the jig saws, hope that's just my bad eyes...)

You know we didn't weigh it but it was definitely heavy, especially with a 4 cell along with power system. The scroll saw does have dust suckers, however, we took them off for the 30 seconds of filming, once we were done we put them back on. If you noticed the band saw had its dust sucker on, but the with the scroll saw we had to take it off for filming, way too loud. Thanks,
