Can Girls fly a Tricopter?

by RCTV-UK (Formerly Silly Fokker RC) | June 11, 2013 | (21) Posted in Just Fun

Long term sufferer and Silly Fokker RC daughter Lisa Roberts has been dragged around the model flying field for a couple of years now and has only been allowed on the sticks a couple of times (assisted) as we are all novice flyer's and in no position to teach someone (that's the excuse we've been using)

While out flying the other day Lisa asked if she could fly my (newly built) Tricopter..... Hmmm a difficult one this =\

If I said no I would definitely be upsetting her, however if I said yes I could be saying goodbye to my new toy. What would you do in this situation?

I prepared myself for the worst and handed over the radio to our new pilot wannabee and cringed as I looked at my new toy leaping in to the air.

So..... it was not graceful or all intended movement in the sky but it was controlled and on the whole very good for someone that has never flown.

I promised Lisa there and then that I would take her out the next day with six fully charged 3s 2200mah batteries and let her practice. The idea was to meet up later that day with her dad (who was completely unaware that Lisa can fly) and suprise him.

Here is the video from that day. It was heart warming seeing my best mate Ivor and his daughter together on the flightline watching her fly for the first time =)

I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did.

Well done! Congrats on letting her take the sticks!

Reminds me of my current Girlfriend. So far I have taught her how drive a tractor to feed cattle, ride an ATV, shoot a rifle and pistol, ride a motorcycle, drive a manual transmission, and drive an RC Car. She is such a trooper! Next on the list is RC Boats, Quads and Planes. She is learning all these things a hell of a lot faster than I am. Pretty soon she'll be flying rings around me I bet.

She sounds just like Lisa. She is also leaned to drive a manual car shoot HMR and Airgun and fly multi rotors =) She already out shoots me from the standing position..... Good to know she is not alone out there. Would be nice to have more women doing this sport. Thank you for watching and sharing your story.

Drive a manual transmision? That's not much of a feat, considering I myself only drive manual and hate automatics! This an american thing maybe? hehehehe

Nice to see women in this hobby. :)
I´m lucky to have a wife that loves the Rc-hobby, she flies helis, airplanes, multirotors and cars...aswell flies fullscale ultrailight. :)

hope that more girls will try this hobby and see how great it is!
we have a couple of younger girls in our rc-club, but they are in rc-cars for the moment. :)

I tried to teach my wife to fly but she thinks its silly boys toys. She won't even have a go of my traxxas rustler. I think a great inspiration for female pilots is averagebrunette on YouTube. Now that chick can fly...

I must check that channel out. Is that the one Flite Test featured on the Joe Nall video?

Good video, but I don't really like the title, even if it is a "joke".
Thank you zdsweet. Sorry you don't like the title, what should it be? What exactly is it that you don't like? A bit late for me to change it in the video now as the thumbnail is baked in but I could change the header.

One word. Sexist. Another, discriminatory. There should be no question as to whether or not a girl can fly anything, let alone anyone. Anyone can fly anything if they try. Sorry, probably over reacting, but just my take.

You're right on both accounts, however it was only meant to draw attention to the fact that it is a "girl" flying a "tricopter" (I am sure you will agree this is rare) of course you are over reacting if you take in to account the content of the video. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though and that is yours. Again I am sorry if you or anyone else is upset by my choice of title I just hope others will take it the way it was intended.

I think the issue is not so much "can" she fly, but more on the "does she want to fly?". Men and women arn't attracted to things for the same reason, and handing a transmitter saying "this can go 150mph" for example is not the way to go. The best thing is the same as how you learned to love it: let her find her own way why she likes to fly.

I am sure there are lots of grumpy old men quaking at the thought of it but I agree, at least there would be something worth looking at in the pits =) Oh and someone to make tea and coffee LOL

Hi Jerimiah,

Thank you for the kind comment. I have to say I love the Tcopter designed by Matt Hall (simplecopter.com) I copied his design at it fly's brilliantly! Gonna be buying one of his frames as soon as I have the money! The Flite Test one looks awesome too but I can say as I have not flown it.

That's for sure Lisa is not an ace FPV pilot and is now showing the rest of us how it is done!
More videos showing just how good she is in the near future!
Nice to know she is not alone out there!
