The Best Way to Launch a RC Wing

Guys, let me just say that I've thrown this plane into the ground quite a few times from failed attempts at launches. You can see the guys at flitetest launch their wings sidetoss, like this.

Unless you have a plane that can go vertical, it can be incredibly sketchy. It can roll harshly one way or yaw really bad and it can just go downhill from there.

Now I'm not saying that that way doesn't work, I just haven't been able to get it to work on my large wing.

So I started looking around and looked more into the "overhead" launch

Let me just say that it works. It is really nerveracking at first, but once you do it you will never go back.

It works so great because the plane is already traveling so fast when it is leaving your hand. Not to mention that you would have to try to get the plane to hit yourself, whereas some of the types of launches can hit yourself very easily. Also your hand is already traveling towards the controller, so there is minimal time from plane to controls. Now this does obviously work with all sizes of wings, but it really is a good method for bigger wings that don't have an immense power system, like my wing. This launch style is really "optomized" for big FPV wings.

Hopefully you guys found this simple article to be useful, I know it is making my flights with my wings much more enjoyable.

Thanks for taking the time to share your tip on launching. I do have one question, how much throttle do you use when launching?

In my case, I give full throttle. My plane isn't overpowered (not underpowered either) but I just like full throttle on launch for extra security.

If in mode 2 you should throw left handed.

hahahahahahahahhaahahaha no. I completely see where you are coming from, leave your hand on the controls and throw the plane with your other hand, but since im righty, it would be really hard to throw lefty. And if you do the launch right, you have A LOT of time to get your hand to the sticks.

Nice job, I'll give this a try with my TBS CAIPIRINHA. She is a pain to launch one handed.

been using the overhead launch since i built my first wing based off the 54" fury flyer w/o the center section. got the 54" now but waiting on a couple components. i generally toss at a 45deg up angle at about half throttle just to get the airflow going. after i release, i give it full throttle and i usually get a 20-35% dip while it spins up and then it's off and running.

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED ADDING A POST TO THE WING AND LAUNCHING DISCUS STYLE?
