So I have recently scratch built an FT Arrow to fly with my five year old grandaughter as she love's planes. With the small parks around where I live I can't fly anything big so the Arrow will have to do. I decided to make the nose longer than in the original plans because I could not get it to balance with the 800mha battery. The first flight went okay but the nose took a beating. So I decided I would come up with a plan to make the Arrow into the FT Mini Spear.
This is my arrow with the center portion cut out to make room for the new section(be carful not to cut the servo wires)
First trim the nose flat to make way for the new nose. Don't forget the tabs that go over the center spar as they are on the Spear build. I accidently forgot these. (Opps!) it flew ok but wings were weak in a crash
Cut a spar the size of you gap, and the same height. Create an A fold to create the spar.
Glue on the bottom and sides that line up with the wing spar , don't forget to cut access hole for your gear,
I decided to put my receiver in the center with antenna,s facing forward
Next make a floor and back plate I am actually following the build video for the spear as i go here and just making it smaller , its a b fold and a c fold for the back plate
Here is a shot of the underside
And from the top
Next I made plate,s to hold the power pod
And glued them in I used the old locating tabs for alignment and then cut the back out
Now its time to make the side,s of the pod and the doublers measure from the back and then cut out the gap for the spar
I also cut some length,s of barbque skewer for reenforcement , the two shorter ones get recessed into the doublers for strength
and from the front
Next messure and cut the top hatch and glue the bottom in first just as it,s done for the spear
I made a score cut to help it go around the bbq skewer, Put glue in the gap like you would a wing double bevel fold to glu it to the Skewer.
And here it is folded over and cut to size. Just follow all the steps for the spear.
Next i made little T shaped shelf mounts for the velcro at the back of the plane and some coffee sticks to reinforce the hatch also glue in the front side hatch supports
Power pod time. I made a new power pod that is longer than the old one the goal was to space the motor out so the distance from the prop to the firewall is an inch and a half, it looks about the same as it does on the spear but the spear motor is bigger so more lenth was needed, the part with the speed control drops inside to get more air to it and one hole locks it all together but you can get to it if you need to (After flying it i would move the hole further back towards the motor so it does not ride up on rough landings)
Here is a shot of it all together there is a tonne of room for FPV gear naze board or what ever you want i can go all the way to a 1300Mha battery and still balance
And there she is Mini Spear or maybe The Pillum what do you think. oh p.s. i still have to put bigger spear style wing tips on will fly it this week end and let you know how it goes. (After flight tips. All went ok flys great don,t forget the protruding tabs over the center spar the wings were weak at the joint and after a couple of tree hits from my son who is learning to fly it split. also raise the flaparons a bit as I found my self having to pull back on the stick to keep it level.)
