I found an article about this hover board and it made me wondering.
I know some motor and battery stuff so I calculated if I would theoretically work.
On the site www.gizmag.com they say the ARCA used 36 5,5kw EDF’s to give the thrust.
A similar motor is the C580L 870kv 5kW from Turnigy. One motor uses 93A on 44V to give 6kg of thrust.
36 of these motors would need 72 4500mAh 90C lipo battery's for power.
Dividing 9A (from two battery’s in parallel) by 93A and we have around 0,1 as answer. 60min multiplying with 0,1 and we have 6 minutes of “flight time”.
The motors would give approximately 200kg of thrust (36x6kg). This is enough to lift the heavy board and a person.
So theoretically it could fly, but I still have my doubts.
(I don’t trust it about the fact that it will be released in April. Maybe 1 April J)
Although this board is wildly unpractical, very heavy and very expensive. I love the concept.

What's more, 20 000 $ for a 6-minute flight time and a 9-hour recharge is a bit overkilled...
I wonder how much it would cost to Flite Test to make a similar machine from HK electronics... :-P

And if you're after a hover-board, wouldn't it be best to use some sort of ground effect so if someone falls off if it, it would be impossible for the board to shoot up. Similar to a Ground Effect Vehicle, but using upward thrust instead of forward thrust, somehow.

In addition, it looks pretty hard to control. They all seem to be just balanced enough to keep themselves from falling off. In addition, there is no footage of them really going anywhere on it.
