Winter Time Skids

by ITCyoy543 | January 6, 2013 | (4) Posted in Tips

I just made some skids for my cub today with some stuff laying around my house and i would like to tell you guys how i made them because they were very simple to build.

Things i used to build my skids:

Foam packaging from the box my plane came in.

A flat plastic piece with a 90 degree angle.

4 small wood screws

Tacky glue....takes FOREVER to dry

Cloth

Packing Tape

4 small nails

How i made it:

First i cut out 2 small pieces of foam.

I then fine tuned then both into a ski shape.

When i finished shaping the skids i placed the plastic piece on top on the skid, then fastened the with a wood screw.

After that I placed the tacky glue on the bottom of the skid then applied the cloth.

(I also put the glue and cloth on the place i placed the piece of plastic)

*The cloth and glue mix kinda acts like fiberglass and resin*

After this i placed the packing tape all over the bottom of the skid.

*I placed the tape while the glue was still a little wet*

I fastened the skids to the gear by placing  small hole into the plastic piece.

Then the last thing i did was thread it onto my current gear.

(i also placed 2 small nails into the tip of the skids to strengthen them)

The gear isn't that pretty ,but it sure beats buying some for $15

but you know what, they work so why buy them?

Also you don't have to make it the way i made them but i would strongly recommend the glue and cloth trick, because it really adds to the skids rigidity.

p.s. i know this isn't much of a tutorial but i hope you can use these tips.
