Turnigy 9X Mode Change
This guide is based on the Turnigy 9X Mode 1 Transmitter. It may apply to other radios as well, the procedure is quite similar across various models and brands. If it is in stock, you might prefer purchasing the Turnigy 9X Mode 2. Imagine you wanted to get your hands on a Turnigy 9X radio - the best bang-for-the-buck radio out there - but the mode you fly (probably M2) was not in stock! So you read something somewhere that you could just buy M1 and switch it over to M2 with a few simple steps. Well, here is the guide on how to do both the hardware and the programming change.
Skills, you say? It’s fairly simple, but you need to be careful. You just need a good Philips screwdriver and a pair of pointy tweezers. You can complete the hardware mod in less than 20 minutes.
Hardware Modification
Turn off the radio, and take out the batteries to prevent mishaps. Flip it over, and locate the six screws that hold the radio together. Using a good screwdriver, get all the screws out. They are a bit hard to turn, so be careful you don’t ruin the screws.
Carefully lift up the back panel. Unplug the connector that goes to the back panel from the main board (not shown).
Now compare the following images to your transmitter to understand what we want to do.
Let’s start with removing the parts we are going to change over. You want to remove a spring and a small plastic lever from the right side gimbal mechanism. Use a pair of tweezers to lift off the little spring, then lift the lever up and slide it off it’s pivot.
Now remove the two screws and the long metal plate on the left side gimbal mechanism.
Now let’s put it back together for M2. Grab the plastic lever thing and put it on the small axle shown in the picture. Remember we are going to install it on the left side now, this is the aileron/elevator gimbal (remember the radio is flipped over).
Fold it down gently and check where the spring should go.
Install the spring with a pair of tweezers and check that it stays in the groove.
Now go on to the right side where the throttle/rudder gimbal is and install the metallic strip. Screw in the short screw first, into the plastic holder. Screw it all the way in.
The other screw adjusts the tension, that is, how hard it is to move the throttle stick. Too loose is dangerous, as a jerky movement can move the throttle, and too hard gets annoying while flying. If you have no idea what to set it to, screw it in halfway and feel if the throttle stick suits your liking. Unscrewing makes it loose, screwing in makes it harder.
Connect the back plate connector to the main plate. Make sure you don’t pinch any wires, and put the back panel into place. Put the screws in place again, install the batteries and turn on your radio.
Setup Modification
NOTE: You need to change this configuration for all the models on your transmitter.
Turn on the radio.
Press and hold Menu for 3 seconds to open the setup page.
Press Menu to enter System Setting.
Press Down four times to highlight Stick Select.
Press Menu to enter the Stick Select submenu.
Press Down to highlight Mode 2.
Press Menu to save the setting.
If you have several models configured, change to the next model and repeat the process.
Your Turnigy 9X is now set to Mode 2.
