The MissTake

First and foremost…I would like to thank Chad, Josh&Josh, David and all the “off camera” folks at FliteTest.  Thanks also to HobbyKing and StoneKap for sponsoring FliteTest which inspires so many to dream, build and grow…and my favorite part…Goof around (with some Josh Scott adult supervision).

After many years away from this hobby (giving my Sig Kadet a permanent dirt-nap over 30 years ago), I bought a HZ Champ (recommendation of a local RC retailer) and re-built some lost confidence.

Searching the internet for tips on the Champ, finding the FliteTest website and their “swapable” series, I was hooked.  I built the FT Flyer first and instead of the Delta swapable, I decided to jump to a $-tree foam wing I saw on YouTube.  The beginning of the MissTake!

About 3 seconds into the wing’s maiden flight, I gave it a dirt-nap, busted the motor off the firewall and the prop took a small chunk out of the trailing edge on one side.  I scooped up the pieces of my pride and wing and shelved the wing.

Then watched the newly released FT Old Fogey review and eagerly awaited the plans and build video.   While buying parts for the O-F on HobbyKing I noticed a 24g brushless motor rated at 3000kv, (Wow, I had to have it, not for the O-F but something would come to mind later).

The O-F was a fun build and flies like a dream but the "bank and yank" bug was biting me hard.  None of the 4ch “trainers” I saw online screamed “hey build me”.   Then all those scratch build videos on FT gave me a spark of inspiration.

Remove the canopy/pod from my busted wing and build a “swapable style” tube fuse with Old Fogey style tail section.  Marry the two together into a 4ch sport/trainer.  My busted wing would fly again!  And how!

[Wing minus canopy/pod]

[Swapable-like fuse]  skewers in fuse/rubber-bands hold wing in place

battery is inside fuse, use velcro and play with the placement for best GC.

Remember that 3000kv 24g motor?  With a 2S lipo, 7x5 prop and dual rates at 50%, it’s tame enough for 4ch trainer duty.  With a 3S lipo and 6x5 prop, it rocks!!!  Very fast and smooth with 50% DR, to spice things up more…flip the DR switch to give full throws and hold on!

Yes, there are some wrinkles in the nose...the episode on Throttle/Elevator mixing helped correct the dive at throttle cut...thanks for that one guys!

Now I think she's ready for a little paint and hopefully a flight video soon!

Thanks again FliteTest for helping an old guy turn his mistake into a MissTake!

Thanks for the great comments! This ol girl is helping me learn "bank and yank" flying...

baronbernie: Sorry, I do not have plans but I can offer this advice. For the fuse, i used the swapable series fuse pattern. I used the length of a $tree foam board (30 inches). Where the tabs are on the plan, I drew a straight line at the top of the tabs for the side wall. You could adjust length to fit your own wing design. I drew the cut/fold lines down the length of the board. Then I put the Old Fogy tail section over the cut/fold line until they lined up with the fuse lines from swapable. I then added cut/fold lines and top fold-over piece to left side of fuse. I also used the horiz/vert stab pattern from the fogy. I just squared them off instead of rounding, looked better to me. I used the servo tray from the fogy also, had to cut the height a bit to fit in the fuse. The plywood firewall is the same as swapable except without top holes and I added a 1/4 inch hole to pass the motor wires through.

I hope this helps...watch the Foul Flyer and Old Fogy build videos, they helped me quite a bit with the fold styles.

Thanks Senior 12 for this great idea. I scratchbuilt the Delta Wing from FT and it flies great. I'm happy to know that if it is crashed, I can put a fuse under it and continue to fly with it. Thanks again

Nice looking bird.
If it dies when you chop the throttle all you need to do is add down thrust using washers behind the mount. If you get the right amount going from glide to full throttle will not change the pitch attitude.
BTW I still have an old Kraft 2 channel some where -
