Foam power
Iam not an expert, ‘there are much, much brighter people out there’.
Having taught myself to fly using cheap foam deltas, main reason being they have great inherent stability, that’s the delta effect which I am told, is always trying to fly straight. ‘Not in my early flying days’.
Several different types of battery and engine combinations later, some expensive and some cheep. For me this is what I have found works well, ‘particularly when learning and crashing on a frequent basis’, though it should be said foamy deltas do put up with much abuse.
Anaverage size delta about 80 cm wing span, ‘remember the smaller the more affected by wind’.
I used a 2212-62200KV Outrunner Brushless Motor found on eBay for about £08.00 or $05.50 swinging a 6x4 prop to be great. Plenty of power to get you clear of terra firma, the engine runs very cool and draws less power from the battery.
A 35 Amp ESC is good but if you can afford a higher ampere, say a 60 do it.
Kavan plastic propellers are really good as whist they are not a dedicated electric prop they are really crash resistant. Also when learning you don’t need too much speed.Once I had mastered the basics I changed to a 7x4 which gave a higher speed, and less noise.
All powered with a 3 cell11.1V 2200MAH 25C LIPO Battery and with the 6x4 prop will give an easy 25 min flying time.....
‘Much more than the brain will cope with when first learning.’
‘To summarise’,
Nothing wrong with More expensive engines and batteries but when learning I believe all you need is good cheap reliability. ‘When I started, I just needed to know what electrics to buy to get airborne.’
Modern RTF trainers are great but if you want steady cheap flying, safe in the knowledge if you smash it up on Saturday morning you could build a quick replacement airframe or a repair which would have you back in the air by Sunday.
So here is the list I wanted when I first started’:
1. 2212-6 2200KV Outrunner Brushless Motor
2. 35 Amp ESC or above
3. 3 cell 11.1V 2200MAH 25C LIPO Battery
4. Kavan plastic propeller size 6x4
I've got scratch built Extra 300 that needs some extra support, but I fear adding that much tape might put it over the edge for weight.

Very well spotted,
It's extreme packing tape, or reinforced packing tape, basically its fibre glass laminated in to clear vinyl .. I am just writing an article about it... the weight gain is minimal, less than painting almost. It almost doubles the strength of the airframe. Again not my idea the combat flyers use it and they are always on the ground.
thanks for the interest

Thanks for the comments, Deltas really do make great trainers and your quite correct once you are ready they will 'hot ship' also. Like your prop choice. I have just started experimenting with wing spoilers; if they work I will post the findings.
