DIY 50$ FPV Goggles !

by val0production | July 26, 2013 | (28) Posted in How To

Hi ALL, my name is Val0production [I'm French so my english is pretty bad xD] and today I want to show you my new project, FPV for all, maybe ''Open source project''... My idea is to create FPV goggles for only 50$...

I had the opportunity to test glasses FPV fat-shark ...I noticed that the vision is much broader and also look better than glasses Fat-shark FPV! So I highly recommend all of you to make one !!!

This FPV goggles are very light so when it's on your head it's very comfortable !

You just need :

-Little car monitor +4' = 25$

http://www.amazon.com/Monitor-Support-Resolution-Automobile-Rear-view/dp/B006MPRFJQ

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/4-3-lcd-monitor

http://dx.com/p/4-3-lcd-monitor-for-visual-reversing-vehicles-reverse-camera-ntsc-pal-73626

-Foam = 5$

-Ski goggles = 15$

And I invited you to watch my video...

I also want to thank Flitetest for their very interesting videos and very good quality, so good continuations !!!

Your Website is Awesome ! ;-)

That is an awesome design my friend, really innovative use of materials!
Does your monitor suffer from the dreaded blue screen?
Also perhaps it might be good to paint the inside of the foam black.
Really well done mate I'm definitely going to have to make one of these.

thanks! yes unfortunately it suffers from the blue screen ...
for light, it is completely absorbed by the foam and cardboard put on

i have done the same thing but i use another screen that i have that was 20 dollars or so to buffer the signal and makes the blue screen a bit less sensitive .

I actually built some thing similar to this using the Eco goggles method. I just need to figure out a strap. I added a credit card magnifier lens, such as used in the eco fpv goggles. The screen I use is about $15 on ebay and a little smaller but looks nice and clear. The eco goggles foam pieces have been out of stock for a while now so I made my own. I like your setup, I may need to look into using some sort of mask like you have as my strap.

How long is it from the tv to the center-front of the goggles? I'm going to try to make a set like this too.
val0production on August 5, 2013
~0.012 meter in the center-front...
~0.023 meter on sides...

Maybe I wasn't clear in my last question... 0.012 meters = 1.2 cm. How far away is the TV from the goggles? It looks like it is around 20 cm. I'm going to get started on a set of these probably tonight. I love this idea though!

Soorry it's between 12cm and 16cm from eyes !!!

I built them too long the first time and just rebuilt them again. This time I used black foam board from dollar tree so I don't have to paint anything and that seems to have worked real well. I'm anxious to get out and try them. Thanks for posting this article!

Is the strap strong enough to hold it on your head? It seems like the screen would be a little heavy for it and it would want to pull away from your face.

The screen is very light and the goggles are make with foam, so fpv goggles system are light !

Great job. I would suggest to paint the inner of the ''box'' with some black paint (preferably matt) so your eyes only focus on the screen and not the white foam around. Plus u wont have reflections with the black paint. cheers

Hi, this is great! I did follow-up research and also saw the ECO glasses with the Fresnel lens... and it got me thinking. At my age I'm just starting to use reading glasses - 1.5 magnification at present, but most big supermarkets are selling reading glasses for about $1.50 with magnification values well beyond that - the maximum strength shifts my minimum clear focal range to about 2 inches without any more 'eye effort' than reading a paperback. SO just like the Fresnel lens, it should be possible to use these to reduce the actual length of the 'viewing box' by placing these reading glass lenses in the front of your eyes. So that's $1.50 for the lenses, a cheap screen (max $20, but I've seen them as low as $9.00) and a home-made mask, or ski goggles, or how about gas-welder's rectangular goggles (http://www.mscdirect.com/product/63250682) if you want to splash out? I reckon you're talking $30.00 for a headset (or as low as $15 if you get the right deal). Amazing! If someone can identify a screen 'brand/model' that doesn't bluescreen, that would be ideal. :)
Which takes me to another thought - if you set up a twin lens system (2xkeychain cameras and twin screens in the goggles), it should be possible to get 'normal' 3D vision with depth perception - has anyone been developing this for RC? Not that I think it's necessary, just wondering. I'm sure a 'smart' programmer could 'timeshare' the high frequency signal into two components L & R without taxing the transmitter/receiver setup too much?

As you rightly say, Alibopo, "Stereo" vision is not a necessity, but the thought has occurred that by mounting dual cameras with a large distance between them - say either wingtip on a flying wing or similar - the result of low-ish flying could be a spectacular visual effect! :)

Alibopo, your idea using reading glasses might work. I got a card fresnel, and it gave me a headache after 1 minute of trying to focus.
- The cheapest non-blue screen I know of is the Philips PD7012 or PD9012. I have one and it goes snow, but the resolution is crap. Just like these sub $30 LCDs you guys are listing.
- 3D is very possible with 2x cameras, 2x vTx, 2 vRx, and some way to combine it. The Oculus Rift will probably have an easy way to combine them in the future.
- DON'T listen to Lightningslim - the camera distance needs to be just like your own eyes or else it will hurt your head.
