Piper Cub: The Best Flying Plane?

The J3-Cub was first introduced in the 1930’s as an affordable trainer for the masses. It was soon used to train over 80% of all American military pilots during WW2 which solidified its reputation. Since then, it continues to be flown all over the world. It is still renounced as one of the best flying airplanes a pilot can experience.

What’s New?

This is the third (V3) generation of the 1400mm Cub from FMS. Although this is the case, it’s not immediately obvious what’s changed beyond the new Swiss paint job which replaces the standard Cub yellow.

Of course, you do get the included floats (with a water rudder) which is an addition to the aircraft. These are pretty much the standard set of floats you get from FMS. They’re also found on the FMS Kingfisher.

Is It For You?

The Cub has always been a relaxing type of model airplane to fly. The configuration has always great for more beginner/intermediate pilots, what with their high wing and docile flying characteristics. The fact that this FMS model comes with floats included makes it all the more interesting.

The Cub is certainly not designed to be an overpowered model, but you can expect enough power from that 3536-850KV motor and 40A speed controller to pull of some graceful loops and rolls. Most of the time, though, you’ll probably want to fly it nice and scale.

As a standard go-to, easy-to-fly airplane that you can keep in your hangar, you can’t really go wrong with this quality FMS model. If you’re looking for a scale looking model that flies great with a bunch of great features, this one might well be for you.
