taking foam to the next level

by brianm311 | June 24, 2014 | (22) Posted in Projects

with all i have learned from flite test and the rc community i decided to take my foam building to the next level, with no plans to go by and a few thoughts mulling around in my head i decided i would try and build something a little different staying in the medium of foam of course but different so i took some measurements from a plane i had (sensei) and i began to build, like i said there are no plans for this plane but i hope it will inspire others to do the same,a little foam some tape an some imagination an the sky's the limit! (no pun intended!) and of course the flitetest site there is some great tips and advice to guide you through the process, (materials, 3 sheets construction paper, one sheet foam board(just for the body i used 3 total 2 more for my wing) tape and a glue gun,

formers are 6in by 4 1/2 the tall one is 7in by 4 1/2

i used a yard stick for the body rib, after i ripped them on a table saw i could align the 2 giving me exact location markers for my formers

here you can see the coffee sticks in place for support and attachment of my construction paper

i used wider popsicle sticks i got at wal mart on the bottom

i used 1/4in ply on the bottom for my landing gear mount

starting to cover the hull in construction paper shiny side out

the top beams where the wing mounts are also strips from a yard stick

getting the rudder an elevator cut

body almost finshed

here you can see the rudder an elevator in place and where i stopped my formers

servos for rudder an elevator mismatched as you can see (hence the name recycler) i used parts from the parts drawer to build this the only thing i had to order was my motor

landing gear is now on

i made my cowling from an old fan that had died just needed to cut out for the motor

battery box in place i made this out of 1/4 ply as well

oops didn't do something right here battery is a little tall in it's box oh well i think i can make it work!

adjustable mount in place, makes it easy to adjust for thrust angle i'm useing a grand turbo 2820 with a 11.6 prop an a 11.1v 2200 mah with a 45amp turnigy speed controler

for the wing i did a ten inch bottom  flite test style wing i added a 1/4 inch dowel on top of the foam spar for strengthman i can't wait to fly this!

here it is finished havn't flown it since the maiden bad weather ( soon though! )

wing is 58in and the body measures 481/2 for the graphics i used a red an black sharpie on the wing an on the body i used red tail light repair tape from wal-mart over the wing i put a layer of clear to protect the wing

Its fantastic that so many more people are discovering what can be done with foam and traditional building methods. Great job! As a shameless plug...

More folks should try this as it is a rewarding building experience.

thanx! the paper actually worked out well iv'e flown it now 50 or more times since i submitted this article and it is still mint, even after folding the landing gear(small design flaw now fixed) it is also removable so it is easy to replace!! thanx again !!

Good work. I'm new to foam. How were you able to do the compound curves on the windscreen?

thank you! i used construction paper so i was able to bend it to fit, it did take a few tries to get the right shape that allowed me to do the bend with the best results

wow to cool I like how your brain works did you cover in construction paper or poster board they are two different products in Canada I made a wing out of poster board and it was heaver than the same wing out of foam what is your final weight and the fan cover as a cowl is to cool thanks for shareing

sorry i haven't replied sooner the final weight is around 1430g's as far as the paper i want to say it is poster board little thicker than construction paper, it is the same material i used on my ft for the rear turtle deck. and the fan cowl works great an it recycles old stuff that would normaly be thrown away!! again thanx!!

Thanks for answering a few questions I had, I am going to do a wrap with just the foam (no paper, peel it off) then going to use a process I saw on youtube using thin masking paper n white glue then light sand n paint. Pat yourself on the back bro you did a gr8 job congrats!

thank you very much!! i did a foam wrap (l-19 bird dog) i used a very thin foam and than covered it in thin yellow lens repair tape, it had a few wrinkles but looked good none the less, good luck with yours and send a link with some pics would love to see it !!

Beautiful build! The wooden stringers on the sides are a great idea. I'm sure they add a lot of strength and durability. I'm thinking another one on the bottom would make it even better. I'm definitely going to try this technique!

thank you! it works well, i did put a smaller spar on the bottom next time i think io might do like i did on the sides just for more support in the tail section,

thanx! on the top and bottom i was going to cut a full length one to go down the body but i opted to use popsicle sticks insted to try an lessen the weight they do add strength and also allow a place to attach the outer covering. again thanx!!

Very nice build. It is kind of mixed media, going back to some of the old balsa methods. Very nice finish and detailing.
Someone once said a plane that looks good usually flies good too. Some truth to that I think.
