E-Flite Apprentice S 15E

by FliteTest | July 5, 2013 | (33) Posted in Reviews

The E-Flite Apprentice S 15E. Equipped with "SAFE" technology. Designed to teach people how to fly, on their own.

There are 3 flight modes. Beginner, intermediate and advanced.

One strange quirk is that you have to remove the prop and cowling to attach the front landing gear.

The 59" span width makes this plane stable in the air, but also more cumbersome to transport.

In "beginner mode" the Apprentice S 15E helps you with take offs and landings.

It also self levels during flight and limits the pitch and roll angle.

"Intermediate mode" lets you do more advanced maneuvers but still limits the pitch and roll angle.

"Advanced mode" Has no restrictions.

It's fast enough to catch up to birds.

Slows down pretty well.

The Joshes seems to really like it. A plane to grow in. It's fun for both the beginner and advanced pilot.

Josh pushed the plane to the limits...

Chat it up on the forums!

I like this kind of episode, the old fashioned kind like tramsar said. All it needs is the music! keep it up and Bixler did you have a Dew before this episode? You seemed to really want to get the birds this time!

You actually can fold the wings. I have pictures to prove it! But only after hitting a pole and damaging the carbon spare. My father is using this plane to learn, he hit a pole, it flipped on it's top, righted it's self and kept flying. It was awesome! We didn't know it had damaged the spar, and one hard bank later it lawn-darted into the road. We used a brass tube inside the carbon spar just incase.

The "Oh Crap" button sold me. Or, Josh Scott's squirrel conversation. Or Bixler's FEAR ME!

Thanks Flite Test! Based on your recommendation, I've purchased the Apprentice for my fiancée, Tracy. She's never flown, simulated or otherwise, nor has she even played any of the Bank-and-Yank video games I'm sure most of us have.

It's the perfect platform for a beginner; trainer tendencies with smartly-implemented electronic protections as well. You guys have made my life a little easier, and thank you!

I actually saw this video after buying the Apprentice. I have not been disappointed. It is a game changer has Bixler suggested. I knocked the firewall off twice. Once when the nose dug in the grass on landing causing an immediate stop and the other when it got blown off of the table while I was away charging the battery. Both repairs were easily made with a glue gun.

I wonder if we will see the SAFE system on other airplanes. It could prevent a lot of crashes.

I loved this review and am wanting to get back into rc flying after being out of it for 40 years and I think this would make a perfect 1st plane to get back in with. It would be nice if you would give us some info on how much flight time there is on the battery's that come with it.

Great review, loved it. But in the UK anyway, targeting birds feels a bit... 'dodgy'. No hate mail please. I have AS3X on 3 aircraft, SAFE on two, and I love it. For wind management it's great.
