Dance performance thanks to Flite Test

Hello Flight test and everyone else interested

This article is to thank flight test for teaching me about RC planes and to explain about a project I am working on.

Two of my passions in live are dance and technology and I aways find ways to combine the to. This time I had an idea to make a choreography about falling and flying. This is where the RC planes come in. I bought a Bixler and learned to fly it. Then started filming  the location our dance performance will be summer 2014. The footage I took was made with 2 camera's 1 pointing straight down and the fpv camera facing forward. The recordings I made will be projected on the dance floor while dancers dance on it.

The concept in a bit more detail is like this:

Somewhere in our world there is a little door in the floor. I few times a year(during the show) its allowed to open this door to let the audience have a look inside. Inside the audience can see a deep hole with somewhere down clouds and under that an alternative world that looks exactly like ours. The clouds are hole are projected on the floor.

After opening the door something goes wrong and the door closes so hard. The floor around it starts crack to break. After a while the door isn’t attached to the floor around it anymore and starts to fall down together with the dancers. This is the point were my choreography about falling will start. The dancers will fall sometimes holding on to stuff that fell in the hole as well. After a long free fall they learn to control their fall and the falling turns into flying. In the end they land on a the same location they have started with a new door in the floor.

To make the video that I will use, I will use some animations I made but also video recordings from the Bixler

I made I short preview video of the video that will be projected on the floor, with the footage I have till now. Later this year I will ad the dancers on top of the projection. So so there will be live dancers on a floor projection.

I was inspired by the feeling of falling and the question whats real?

Its probably best to skip the first minute of the video. After 1 minute the floor breaking starts. The falling part might take a little long without the dancers on top so skip to 3:25 for some fpv footage

Still a lot to improve on the video more a prove of concept that I would like to share.

At the moment I am making more footage with a slightly bigger plane(Finwing), because I couldn't fit 2 gopro's and an osd in the Bixler.

Thank you Flight test for teaching me! Its was(and still is) a lot of fun!

I like the idea to have the camera face down a lot. A perspective you don't see a lot. Also the dunes and shore shots are amazing. The CG clouds on the other hand deserve a bit more attention, for the longest time in the beginning I couldn't tell what they were. You might also try to fly into the clouds yourself and use the moment the camera turns all white to cut to a different scene - that will require low hanging clouds and is of cause way more challenging.
